Nixon had good intentions for the country, as he significantly improved relations with China. 1972 was a very important year for the United States and China, because it marked the end of 25 years of separation between the two nations. Prior to the president, Richard Nixon talked of the need for improved relations with the PRC (People’s Republic of China), with which the U.S. did not keep diplomatic relations as it solely recognized the government of the Republic of China on Taiwan as the government of China (Nixon, 2). Nixon visited February 21 to 28, 1972, which presented an opportunity for the American public to see pictures involving China for the first time in more than twenty of isolation from them, along with many other benefits (Relations, 1). Nixon even had a meeting with Chairman Mao Zedong, while the First Lady at the time, Pat Nixon, toured schools, factories and hospitals in the city of Beijing, Shanghai and Hangzhou with the large American press corps in town.…

To my family he is just another family member, however, to the rest of the world he was a great politician who turned into a “crook” politician. Nixon was most well known for his political career by being elected as the 37th President of The United States. He had a very successful life and in order for others to understand his success it is important to look at his development. He was born in Yorba Linda, California on January 9, 1913 to Francis and Hannah Nixon. The Nixon’s were a small Quaker family who tended to be toward the lower end of socioeconomic status but still…

Some decisions leave a negative view on the President’s administration, while others label them as characteristics of a strong and smart leader. Richard Nixon jumped through hoops of criticism by mending foreign affairs, such as reestablishing connections with China while relieving tension with the Soviet Union. Nixon's plan was to improve relations with China; consequently, Russia would focus on improving connections with the United States. The plan was called “Triangulation,” which, according to Miller Center, “was working; fear of improved relations between China and America was leading the Soviets to better their own relations with America, just as Nixon hoped” (Richard Nixon: Foreign Affairs). Nixon took a chance by trying to improve the United States’ relations with China even though he wasn’t sure how the USSR would respond. This gamble expressed the courage within Nixon and highlighted the confidence he had to change the game of foreign affairs. Had Nixon not been elected President, the possibility of tensions snapping on the eastern side of the world would have been more likely. Undeterred by mainstream media criticism, Nixon’s courageous actions brought positive results to the nation; unfortunately, Nixon failed to see the fatal end to his political career in a bold decision that is now referred to as the Watergate…

Détente would require Americans to view the Soviets as friendly negotiators rather than civil aggressors, and to turn to China to stabilize the international system. Arguably the only success of détente was Sino-American relations and a limit to arms such as the SALT (Strategic Arms Limitation Talks) I and ABM (Anti-Ballistic Missile Systems) Treaty in 1972. However, this made Sino-Russo relations distant. Resulting in an international community that was…
