Preventing Type 2 Diabetes
In a normal healthy person there is a healthy pancreas that contains beta cells. Beta cells control, store, and give off hormone insulin. Beta cells give off insulin when carbohydrates are eaten or when blood sugars are low. However, in a person with type 2 diabetes things are different. Beta cells in a person who is just developing diabetes discharge to much insulin causing them to grow. Soon after this happens the body shuts down the beta cells causing the body to become insulin resistant. Diabetes is a problem with your body that causes blood glucose (sugar) levels to rise higher than normal. This also can be called hyperglycemia. Type 2 diabetes is the most common form of diabetes. Type 2 diabetes is very common in the United States. Most people who get type 2 diabetes are overweight. This is because being overweight causes the body to not be able to use insulin because there is too much fat. Having a BMI 25 or higher increases your risk of having type 2 diabetes. If a person does have a BMI of 25 or more they should look to lose weight. Losing 5% to 10% of your body weight lowers your chance of getting type 2 diabetes. Another way to prevent type 2 diabetes is by eating healthy. By eating healthier the body will lose weight or be at the right weight so that the body will use insulin properly. If overweight, it is important to eat healthy foods in small amounts all day because large amounts of foods cause blood sugars to be high. Lastly, it is important that all people stay active so they lower their chances of getting type 2 diabetes. By exercising your body becomes more sensitive to its insulin. Physical exercise helps improve blood glucose control and can prevent or delay type 2 diabetes, also it can positively affect blood pressure, cardiovascular events, living a longer life, and the overall quality of
