This issue is topical due to the recent school shootings such as Sandy Hook Elementary in…
A few things that to help prevent School Shootings but failed would be the zero tolerance policy. The zero tolerance policy is preventing drugs and weapons being brought onto school property. But many students get away with it because they bring weapons to school hidden in their backpacks without anyone noticing, then they cause a tragedy, “Schools are not safer, or more educational because of zero tolerance policies.”(Nick Gillespie 4). This policy doesn't change anything so why have this policy when no one notice who enters school with weapons. We need a stronger system to prevent this from happening.…
The issue of policing schools has been widely debated across the country. As a high school student myself, I believe policing schools would be extremely beneficial and would enhance the safety of schools everywhere. The article “Does America Really Need More Cops in Schools?” by Susan Ferriss states, “The only way to stop a bad guy with a gun is with a good guy with a gun," National Rifle Association executive vice president Wayne LaPierre said after a young man shot his way into his former grammar school on December 14 in Newtown, Connecticut, and killed 20 first-graders and 6 educators.” The recent attacks on schools has raised many red flags concerning the safety of students. With this being noted, it is time school officials took action in effort of halting these vicious attacks.…
The tragedy of Sandy Hook Elementary has definitely been an eye-opener for many students and staff in schools. The shooting occurred on December 14, 2012 in Newtown, Connecticut. This horrible event took the life of many innocent students and staff of Sandy Hook. Twenty-year-old Adam Lanza shot twenty children and six adult staff members of Sandy Hook” ("Sandy Hook Elementary School Shooting"). It has definitely left many people wondering whether arming teachers with guns will prevent future incidents similar to this from occurring in the future.…
School shootings are a form of violence that happens when a child or student is bullied at their school and wants revenge on their peers. The go to the school and open fire and often afterwards commit suicide. Why do school shootings happen, the effects of shootings and how it can be prevented are very important key topics that will be discussed in this paper.…
Campuses grow more vulnerable every day as the nation continues on its downward spiral. Since 2010, the country has witnessed over a hundred shootings committed on school campuses. Shootings on school grounds, whether it is an elementary or post graduate school is far from a new concept. During the 1990s’ Congress implemented multiple Gun Free School Zone Acts for federally funded schools to help create safer school zones by preventing any gun related violence. The problem being that the gun free school zones act only designates distances that keep law abiding citizens defenseless, while any potential criminal has a safe haven to commit their crime with no fear of initial response. Every certified…
Since 2010, there have been 49 cases of school shootings that left 63 injured and 66 dead. This growing problem has increased over the years and has put fear in the minds of parents and their children. Even though children may jokingly exaggerate that school is terrible, it now seems as if going to school is truly a life or death situation. There has to be someone or something to blame and it seems as if this problem can debatably be blamed on the security among schools. Having a more advanced security system in schools is essential to protecting the well-being of staff and students.…
Although overall school violence is declining in America, mass shootings in suburban and rural areas are becoming more common ("School" par 1). On April 20, 1999 Eric Harris and Dylan Klebold decided to bring firearms and explosives to Columbine High School to go on a shooting rampage. These two boys, before killing themselves, killed 12 students, one teacher, and wounded 24 others. The cause of this Massacre was violence at the school place, Harris and Klebold were bullied as students and no action was taken when they started talking about killing people or physically hurting people. At the beginning of the school year teachers should give students talks about violence and school shootings. Teachers should tell students that violence is not a joke and it needs to be taken as a serious offence, whether there is going to be a fight at…
School shootings in general are tragic, because they often affect innocent victims and almost always could have been prevented. In the given scenario Harless actions are in fact unstoppable, but the actions of the faculty are quite the opposite. The school went about the situation completely wrong. Instead of confronting the students once notified they are possibly in possession of a firearm, they should have notified law enforcement, worked to secure the area then isolate Harless and McCoy. In this situation, the boys are both criminals and victims but the issues they experienced at home or in the past do not and will never justify their actions. Per the list of symptoms given on the U.S Department of Veterans affairs website I do not believe they are suffering from PTSD, but I would also point out not enough back ground was given to support or deny the claim. I find that 10 years served is not equivalent to a person’s life in addition to the countless others affected by Harless’s actions. If kids are getting 10 years for smoking pot the scales that the blind lady of justice is using are off balanced. This whole scenario is wrong in my book…
A national telephone survey finds that 62% of Americans with children of elementary or secondary school age would feel safer if their school had armed guards (Pavlich). Many people (parents) believe that if schools had armed guards on campus they could stop the next mass murder at schools. These are some of the reasons that the government and school boards should allow armed guards on school campuses.…
One cause of school shooting is the discipline in parenting. Nowadays, a lot of parents have guns on their house, however, they are not aware of the danger of having a gun with the wrong discipline by the parents. For example, a child might see his father cleaning his gun or having it on his hand. This gives the child a different perspective of the use of guns, and they believe they are not as dangerous as they are told. There have been many cases where children carry gun from family member to school. In addition, in most families both father and mother work. This may not sound extremely important, but when it comes to education children don’t receive the same discipline by their parents when they are working all day.…
Every year that passes there is yet another tragic story of how a beloved child has fallen victim to a school shooting. These horror stories many times have no explanation as to why the school shooting has occurred, leaving us in shellshock. Since the columbine shooting on April 20th, 1999 when thirteen people lost their lives, some due to religious belief, there have been thirty-one school shootings. This is a staggering number of shootings that have resulted in a death toll of 162 victims – not including the Oklahoma City bombing. Thompson tell us that the “school system is trying to prevent school shootings but what they are doing is simply not enough. School shootings have become more deadly and the effort of the schools seems to not have any effect.” (Thompson par. 7) In fact, most people have no idea exactly what the school system is doing to try and stop these school shootings. If the people don’t know what is being done, than there is a good chance that the school system is doing very little to nothing at all.…
Schools are supposed to be a safe environment for students to learn and thrive, not an environment of constant alertness and anxiousness. Families should not feel nervous or apprehensive to send their children to school because they are not sure of their safe return home. Because of how common school shootings are, these adjectives that I used in the previous sentences are familiar to many families across this country. A school shooter has one purpose and one purpose only: to shoot as many people as he/she can. With the growing rate of suburban school shootings, it is the school security’s responsibility to keep students safe and out of harm’s way. School shootings are becoming more prevalent in today’s society because…
Many people think they are safe when they are inside school, which should be the case but sadly it is not. Over forty school shootings have happened within one year. School shootings have been a constant problem for our nation, in order to protect all of us, we need to create a dynamic solution.…
Resulting with 12 dead and 20 injured, April 20th, 1999, ultimately became the day of the worst high school shooting in U.S. history at Columbine High School, prompting a national debate on gun control and school safety. According to the article Columbine High School Shootings “In the aftermath of the shootings, many schools across America enacted “zero tolerance” rules regarding disruptive behavior and threats of violence from students (History.com).” In addition, there have been many more strategies used to prevent such events from happening in the future. Educators and the police focus on suggestions such as training, raising money for emergency preparedness, training school bus drivers in security and hardening school buildings’ vulnerability…
