This case study is based on five adult learners with learning difficulties. All learners are from different backgrounds, ages and cultures. All learners are developing their practical living skill for when they leave college. The aim for all learners is to provide a range of skills to develop independence in the home, community and at work. This can help the learner to improve in the following areas managing change, making own choices, being safe in and around the community, develop Skills for community living and their household skills.
For most learners being in a college environment was their first. In the class that was observed, all learners had a one to one supporting teacher to help them reach their goals. The tutor of the class needed to ensure that all her teaching staff was aware of the different abilities with the learners so that all can be included in all teaching sessions. This was done through teaching staff reading risk assessment and support plan. Teaching staff will also read session plans and learner tracker, so that they are aware of the learning outcome for the day with the learner that their working with.
In this class room, communication was key for all learners to understand their objective, enabling them to learn to their full potential. Most learners were able to understand little verbal communication but mostly used visual sign and Makaton. This was because too many words could trigger of challenging behaviours among the learners. Two of the learners were always out of the class room, this meant they will miss out on group learning a lot. Their tutor was always inconstant battle with her planning, how she could get the learners involve in group session and not be out the class room. The tutor had to think about the layout of the room this was key. The tutor to ensure that the learners had their own space,
