In the book Privilege, Power, and Difference by Allan G. Johnson he talks about the different troubles and issues dealing with privilege, the differences in this society, power, gender and race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, social class, and disability standing. He talks about his own experiences backing it up with facts, memoirs, and other documents.…

The best way for the medical profession to overcome disparities in healthcare is to enhance treatment outcomes by improving equality of care. As a child, I relied on government funded healthcare programs for medical treatment. Currently, I am insured through my employer’s health insurance policy and am able to enjoy the luxuries of having private insurance. Experiencing treatment from both channels I realized a gap in the quality of care. The medical profession can fill this gap by focusing on teaching compassion and equality in the classroom. Muhammad Ali once said, “It’s the repetition of affirmations that leads to belief and once that belief becomes a deep conviction, things begin to happen.” If medical programs continue to emphasize the…
Health disparities from no access to healthcare lopsidedly influence a developing fragment of a population. Clear differences exist in rates of medical coverage scope. The outcomes of being uninsured are vital and contain utilization of lesser preventive administrations, poorer well-being result, an expansion of death and incapacity rates, bring down yearly wages due to illness and disease, and the exceedingly created phase of sicknesses. Therefore, the uninsured gathering shelter being slightly poor, youthful, and from racial and additionally ethnic minority. Disparities in health and health care does not only affect the groups facing disparities, but also limit overall improvements in quality of care and health for the broader population…
The medical profession can respond to healthcare disparities in several ways. In my opinion, their strongest methods in doing so are through education, volunteering, fundraisers, and community cohesion efforts. One has to remember that healthcare disparities are the end result, not the problem itself, and in order to prevent this outcome, the real issues must first be addressed.…
Disparities in healthcare refers to differences between ethnic groups in health insurance coverage, access to care, and the quality of care. Although the term disparities is often used to describe racial or ethnic disparities, there are many dimensions of disparity that exist in the U.S. "There's evidence indicating that socioeconomic status, racial discrimination, and their consequences play a substantial role in health disparities in the U.S." Research shows that racial and ethnic disparities in health are the result of existence of adverse social determinants that contribute to minorities poor health and less access to healthcare. In this report I talk about why there's disparities in healthcare, and the reason why African Americans have…
Reducing and eliminating health status disparities by providing access to appropriate health care is a goal of most health delivery systems. As advanced health care providers employed at the retail clinic, we attempt to reduce or eliminate health care disparities by providing high quality, affordable care to the uninsured, low-income minority populations. This group of populations are less likely to have access to medical care by way of primary care. As a result, these populations tend to use more costly services and are not reached by early preventive care or intervention services. In a general sense, the retail clinics ease the primary care burden by providing low cost affordable care. Retail-based convenient care clinics are small health…
How can we define health care disparity? In a world in which we have set parameters, measurements and numbers, health care disparity is one of those concepts that are not easy to explain or to define, unless you have experienced it. As a minority myself, I have always wondered if this is a reality in our current health care system or just merely a difference in outcomes between races. The reality is that, there is a difference, as I have experienced it many times as a patient myself and in the work field as a nurse. I believe this is one of the current non-managerial challenges that we face in our health care system, and it is a problem that unless we improve our efforts to end it right now, it will be one of the major challenges in our future.…
I enjoyed reading your post. When I thought of privilege, I thought it was a person or people that grew up in upper class, that they were born into wealth and had not work as hard as someone who is lower class, or middle class to get where they are. You look at the media and how Caucasians who had committed worst crimes get lesser time than an African American who committed a non violent crime or same crime as a Caucasian get harsher time. I also agree privilege can be applied to different regions and language because rural communities have more opportunities as far as more jobs, better pay while poorer communities do not offer that many jobs and lesser pay.…
Perhaps the United States is the only industrialized nation in the world without the universal healthcare system for its citizens. A large number of the U.S. population does not have healthcare coverage, and it is more obvious among the population of color, minorities, low socioeconomic statuses, and cultures. Studies show Blacks, Hispanics, American Indians and people with low income are likely to be uninsured. They not only lack the healthcare coverage, but also do not get the quality of care and experience worse health outcomes. Disparities in health and healthcare are persistent problem in the U.S. As a prospective student pharmacist and future healthcare professional, it is a significant issue to me.…
America is a mixing pot of varied races, religions, and cultures. These factors affect the way an average person lives his or her life, as each individual comes from a different culture and background. Another forgotten factor of America is the king of privilege a person will receive. On Thursday, the class did the privilege line test in order to see how there are unseen privileges that an individual tend to oversee. Some students had more obstacles in their life than others. In the beginning of the activity, I noticed how excited everyone was, despite the heat, however that quickly changed. During the activity, the atmosphere of the class quickly changed. As the questions kept coming, the mood became serious. When I saw a bunch of my classmates behind me, I felt a mixture of uneasy and…
Discrimination has been a major social issue for as long as time, with the changing landscape of race and ethnicity in the U.S. manifesting discrimination in different ways over time. In an incredibly diverse society racial discrimination is prevalent and has greater damages and implications than many imagine. Racism is defined as a set of attitudes, beliefs, and practices used to justify the superior treatment of one racial or ethnic group and the inferior treatment of another racial or ethnic group. Racism is always accompanied by prejudice, a negative attitude based on faulty generalizations about members of selected racial and ethnic groups (p. 53). Racism and prejudice are the ideological basis for discrimination. Discrimination is more…
The word and concept, racism is something that the majority of people in Bethel College community fear to talk about or to discuss. Race is a touchy subject and a problem that people with try to avoid. If you ask anyone if they consider themselves a racist most likely the answer would be ‘no’. I, as a white female thought the same thing. However “Defining Racism” is to ‘prejudge is to make up your mind on an issue before you look at the facts. You can prejudge a book, or a film, or a person. If you prejudge a person you might decide what their characteristics are, what their personalities are like and whether you like them or not simple by the way that they look. If you prejudge them because of their ethnic origin or their skin color then you are racially prejudging them. People who are racially prejudice may belief that their ethnic’s origins or skin color makes the, superior to other people. They stereotype people. Racial prejudice is also called racism. People may use their own views to physically or verbally hurt others who they see to be different to them. Examples of racism can be as extreme as the prosecution of Jews, by Hitler, or by racist jokes, which are often thought to be harmless. I did multiple searches of the word ‘racism’ and I wonder how race influence my world as a white female, and what role it plays in Bethel College community.…
Privilege- a special right, advantage, or immunity granted or available only to a particular person or group of people. Many people take life for granted and don’t realize the amount to privilege we do have. It all starts back in 2013 when you’re young and curious and don’t care what anyone says.…
