Problems of Generation Gap
Problems of Generation Gap
14Oct11
‘Kids these days are so brash, we were never like this when we were growing up,’ is a refrain that I constantly heard from adults around me while growing up.
Not that the refrain has stopped now, it’s just that I myself have joined the ranks of the moaners, something I would never have thought was possible in my harassed childhood years. Who on earth would want to be one of those ‘holier than thou’ adults with their constant stock of stories of what perfect children they had been, how terrifying the adults of their childhood days were (as opposed to the liberal adults they themselves were being), what deprived childhoods they had had in comparison with us and yet never rebelled or complained etc, etc.
Twenty years ago, I would never have thought I would be one of these stuffed shirts, they simply couldn’t seem to see anything good in the budding next generation.
I was hardly a teenager myself however before I started noticing what brats all the single digit aged kids around me were. They all seemed to have longer tongues, bigger ears and sharper eyes (why does the Red Riding Hood wolf come to mind) than my own peers at that age.
It’s probably partly the fault of the parents who spoil their children but nevertheless I notice a trend these days in which children simply are not so innocent anymore. Most of the joy of children is in their very innocence but it is a trait that I find so rare among them that I find myself pleasantly surprised whenever I come across such a child.
Mostly, it has to do with a growing level of intelligence. I was reading up on IQ recently and came across the fact that apparently there is a 10% increase in intelligence with each successive generation.
They certainly seem to grow up much faster and know a lot more than we ever did at their ages. I remember our teachers condemning us as too fast because some of us who had barely entered our teens had started getting boy/girl crazy.
One day, my sister came

In Ann Hulbert's "Beyond the Pleasure Principle", she outlines the Millennial Generation and some of the qualities that set this unique generation apart from the rest of the generations. The Millennial Generation is at one of the greatest social crossroads in our history as a country, as political ideology divides the nation like no time ever before. We as a generation are growing up in a time when political ideology threatens to gridlock the country; A time where media outlets spin and manufacture the news to suit one political ideology or the other; A time in which multiple social issues are being pushed to the forefront of political platforms. This is the setting for my generation and the influence that it has on us. I am the Millennial Generation.…

As children come of age, they begin to lose their innocence. When they are young and less involved in their society, they are curious and full of imagination. “The gum looked fresh, I sniffed it and waited for a while. When I did not die I crammed it into my mouth: Wrigley’s Double-Mint”(Lee, 44). This quote shows…

As we grow to a part of society we learn about the different situations that could be presented to us.We deal with these situations differently which distinguishes us from other people and allows us to grow. It is a loss of innocence, it is the extended amount of knowledge we gain from the experiences we gain.It is the moments where we are no longer in an imaginiative perfect world yet we are enlightened with all of the worlds attributes with being negative or positive. This is the main focus in Lullabies for Little Criminals written by Heather O’Neill, an author who grew up in an environment where kids had lost their innocence at extremely young ages on a day to day basis. It is completely normal for a child to hit the threshold where…

Good and evil will determine the effects of which path a young mind its taught so that’s why parents must educated well with good intensions for a better future. The age of a teenager shows history how it transformed the world including the United States by family values, the high school, and dangerous adolescences etc. What teenagers did was start a fashion changing the world and its rules, becoming rebellious toward their parents values for example pregnancy acured after a marriage but that is not the case anymore for young Americans today. It is very apparent that today’s generation has changed greatly since generation of the “baby boomers”. Children in the current generation are coming into a completely different world than it was just 30 years ago. From almost every kid owning a cell phone, televisions being flat, and social networking, it is obvious this isn’t the same world that our grandparents, and even our parents were raised in. Looking back at the generation of the “baby boomers”, it’s hard to even imagine what life would have been like. The “boomers” grew up in a time of where war was an occurring thing, from World War I, World War II, and even the war in Vietnam. They grew up in the time of the great depression, where bread lines and soup kitchens were a part of many families’ lives. Even technology was far from what it is today. Families were lucky to have one television in their house, people actually used land-line telephones, and a person having a cell phone was unlikely. The book Generation Me does a great job of pointing out any difference between the “boomer” generation, and generation “me”. From the way kids are taught in school, the way kids treat other people, and even the attitude about one’s self has completely changed. The author, Jean M. Twenge, Ph.D., notices every minor change that has occurred between the two generations, and comprised a book that will have you noticing things about yourself that you may have never noticed before.…

This phenomenon was explained by the Flynn Effect. It was first discovered by James R. Flynn when he was trying to understand the connection between the US military test and the mainline IQ test. The Flynn Effect describes how over the past century, the average IQ in industrialized countries has risen to keep pace with the complexity of modern life (Lea Winerman). Our brains haven’t advance in any way significantly since 1930, but our ability to figure out a wider range of conceptual problems has. From 1900 to 2012, the average IQ has increased by 30 points. Which means that the average person today has a higher IQ than 95% of the population in 1900s. A study done in 2014, resulted in the conclusion that today’s young adults are better educated than the silent generation. Millennials are between 19-34 years old and the Silent generation are anywhere from 70-87 years old. The improvement in education in America is clear when you look at the 7 % of women from the silent generation who earned at least a bachelor’s degree. And compare it to the 27% of Millennial women who have already gotten there bachelor’s degree. The amount of Millennials women in America today with a Bachelor degree is almost four times higher than the Silent generation. If you look at men from both generations you will see an education gain from 12% to 21%. These results suggest that Millennials, especially women, are on their way to being the most educated generation by the time they complete their educational journeys (Eileen…
