Process of Modernization
Modernization is the process of social change that was begun by industrialization (Macionis, 2006). The process of modernization occurs when a society transforms from a rural and agrarian condition to an urban, secular, and industrial condition (Britannica Concise Encyclopedia, 2008). Modernization manifests itself in the United States in many different ways and concepts. Some of the ways that it is manifested in the U.S. is summarized by Peter Berger. According to Peter Berger there are four major characteristics of modernization:
• The decline of small, traditional communities
• The expansion of personal choice
• Increasing social diversity
• Orientation toward the future and a growing awareness of time Modernization is very likely to continue in the United States due to the fact that since the Industrial age modernization has been a big impact in the world. The growth of a country is evolved from progress and modernization, so therefore I believe that modernization will continue in the United States. Modernization is a key factor and trend to expanding societies. Although modernization is a worldwide trend, there are still some areas of the world that are yet to be modernized. There are some underdeveloped countries that have not been modernized quite yet; however they will soon have modern advances available to them.
