The goals of these types of programs are organized to juveniles and other participants from future offending by providing first-hand observations from being locked up or in trouble. A program such as Scared Straight puts together organized visits to prisons and jails. This is programed toward juvenile’s or children that have been in trouble in are at-risk for becoming delinquents.
Human awareness programs like Scared Straight became popular crime prevention strategies during the 1970s. These policies on getting tough on our kids have wide public and political appeal. It is quoted in many articles and …show more content…
empirical research that it is unclear if these programs these kids with criminal behaviors.
The theoretical foundation is Deterrence Theory. This theory underlies juvenile awareness programs. This theory is that punishment is with swift, severe, and certain. Hoping that it will deter delinquent behavior. These programs are an aggressive approach. To scare somebody straight, to detour the youth into leading a straight life without crime.
According to deterrence theory this type of programming should work.
You will find programs like scared straight seem to not be very effective in creating general deterrence. I think because we have rational choice theory and because of rational choice theory people have the ability to make their own decisions.
I think that we cannot explain irrational behavior or spontaneous behavior and because of this a lot of things that juveniles seem to get into when breaking the law falls into both these areas.
I think that these programs according to Deterrence Theory do work for the most part. I think there is evidence to show that these programs are crime effective and a good prevention tool. The way this program works to bring the delinquents directly into the idea of being “scared” or “shocked” to the extent that they will not commit future crime was a program that had a great idea.
This program would be very effective because it would let juveniles see the tough reality of already institutionalized people. This program involved the elements to show juvenile delinquents what would happen if they stayed on the path of
crime.
In concluding this topic I’d like to finish by saying I think Scared Straight is a great program and had a great idea. I think there are some studies that would indicate that programs that use confrontational techniques do not always work. However, that nonconfrontational programs may show some results.
In the articles I read I believe these programs do have a certain amount of success. Studies have shown Deterrence Theory works but it has also shown a down side as well. A person has a right to choose this will get in the way of this theory if the wrong choices are made. I look forward to seeing how these theory’s will help in different programs in the future.
