1. Who do you consider the Itwo greatest leaders in American business - past or present? What did/do they do that makes you call them leaders versus managers?
I consider Bill Gates and Steve Jobs to be the greatest leaders in American business. Over the past 25 years, technology was the industry of choice for many of the top business people. Microsoft 's Bill Gates and Apple’s Steve Jobs both exemplify the explosion in that realm. Gates, Microsoft chairman and world 's richest man, is the No. 1 business leader of the past quarter-century for his mix of entrepreneurial energy, dogged leadership and philanthropic interest. The points that make them great leaders are the fact that they were both great visionaries. For example Bill Gates vision was that “Every business and household must have a computer and must run Microsoft software” while Steve Jobs vision was “to make the best devices in the world, not to be the biggest”. Other important point was the fact that they considered failures to be learning lessons. Bill Gates quoted in one of his conferences that “Your most unhappy customers are your greatest source of learning”. Another important point that distinguishes them from being managers is the ability to recognize an opportunity and the ability to capitalize on that opportunity. Inspiring trust within the employees of an organization is also a key feature of a leader, a feature that was well executed by both Bill Gates and Steve Jobs. It was there leadership qualities as well as their managerial skills that enabled them both to be huge business successes.

Matrix organizations are structures that allow for more than one supervisor and greatly support teamwork among those within the organization. Matrix organizational structures are ideal for larger organizations, which is a great advantage given our significant increase in both staff and business. Following a matrix structure would allow the organization to double in size without losing the significance of the goals set forth. A disadvantage of matrix organizational structure, as with large organizations is often inevitable, is the ability of…

The leader I chose is Howard Shultz, Chairmen and CEO of Starbucks. His book is titled Onward: How Starbucks Fought for Its Life without Losing Its Soul. Shultz describes his vision for what a company should be and how he implemented this vision into Starbucks overtime. His vision is value, and unlike many others in his shoes, is not distracted by profit. As many leaders have something of a crucible at some point early on, Shultz has made very little mention of his early life shaping who he is today as a leader but rather his experience with Starbucks and its transformation overtime. At each barrier throughout his and his organization’s career, he learned how to get around it and, in turn, learned how to lead others around it as well.…

The matrix structure encourages individuals to work across teams and projects as well as within their own departments or functions in order to accomplish a main goal. For example, a project/task team established to develop a new product may include design specialists as well as those that obtain marketing and financial skills.…

The advantages of Matrix organizations are that people with the same skills are grouped together; therefore, an equal amount of work is shared between workers. Employees have more than one supervisor and need expertise that comes from more than one person or discipline. The disadvantages of a Matrix organization include little room for promotions, due to the employees being so equal. This could cause problems with discrimination and also create loyalty issues. Having too many supervisors could lead to conflicts and abuse of power.…
