LITERATURE REVIEW
The existing road systems do not alert the traffic congestion, as a result more vehicles coming into the lane increases congestion and cause traffic jam. Congestion on roads has brought burden to users as a lot of time is consumed on roads .Also congestion leads to loss of fuel.
Emergency vehicles such as ambulance and fire engines miss direct path to places they are required due to congested lanes.
GSM based traffic congestion alert system is proposed to alert for congestion condition and avoid further deterioration of traffic .The system can be deployed on already existing GSM network .It uses sensors, transmitters, receivers, GSM modem , microcontroller and LCD screen.
Sensors are placed on the lanes to monitor traffic. Transmitter, receiver and LCD screen are placed at every junction. SIM card is inserted into GSM modem and the system is powered on. Modem registers itself to GSM network.SIM numbers of neighboring GSM modems are stored in transmitting microcontroller. Threshold time for sensor is set.
When a vehicle passes on road , sensor placed underneath the road starts sensing the vehicle. If condition prevails for more than threshold time, interrupt signal from the sensor is sent to microcontroller. Microcontroller detects and services the interrupt. Display messages are stored in interrupt service routine. Microcontroller sends corresponding message to alert congestion to GSM modem. The message is also displayed on LCD display. GSM modem transmits the message in form of short message service (SMS) in all receiving modems in surrounding junctions.
When other modems receive the message is decoded in microcontroller and displayed on LCD screen connected to corresponding modems. This enables the driver to take alternative congestion free route.
After the switch is released the message indicating lane is clear is sent from transmitter junction to all other receiving junctions in the same way. In a short time all LCD screens

Traffic signal controller system is important part of the solution. This system consists of a central Traffic Signal Controller System (TSCS) and traffic signal controllers (traffic lights already have builtin components to be remotely controlled some sensors and cameras will be added when necessary) which are fundamental parts of traffic management system. TSCS provides remote control of traffic signal controllers from a central location. TSCS will monitor the status of traffic lights, retrieve loop data, synchronize lights clocks so that they can run in a coordinated…

This project is aimed at developing a system that will display the message received by the cell or a modem. Microcontroller then will control the system by doing authentication and AT commands. And the messages that is been displayed LED display with interfacing it with AT89c51. This system is easy, robust to use in normal life by any-one at any place. This paper consists of basic introduction, block diagram, software used and many more details on this project. We propose a mobile-based notice board system that consists of a GSM SIM 300, and a microcontroller. The notice is been…

Firstly what are some of the causes of urban highway congestion? Rush hour traffic is one of the leading contributors of highway congestion. It isn 't our imagination. Every year commute times to work take longer and longer. Since 1986 car travel has increased almost 40%, while highway capacity has barley grown. As a result most major interstate routes in Metropolitan areas are jammed during rush hours. Grid locked cost Americans almost the equivalent of $51 billion a year in lost wages and wasted…

This project of ours features Bi-Directional flow of information from and to the Base Station. Sensors are connected to the Micro controller, which sends the information as to which path should be open. According to the vehicle density information corresponding signal lights should glow to pass the traffic. Thus vehicle density based traffic signal is indispensable for accurate services. Standing at the signal for long duration consumes more petrol and time. The aim of this project is to save time, save money and petrol and make the traffic management accurate.…

Abstract— Traffic congestion is a major concern for many cities throughout the world. In many countries transport system basically works on the static scenario where there is a fixed duration for which the red and the green signals are allotted for each lane. This time duration remains the same throughout the entire day whether the roads are flooded with traffic or the lane is literally empty. There is no real time calculation. Because of this the traffic is not properly adjusted and handled on the roads. Developing a sophisticated traffic monitoring and control system would result in an effective solution to this problem. Through this report I present to you an Efficient Traffic Management System that aims at determining the density of traffic in each lane thereby allotting minimum time for the least density lane derived from case study done on the same. Many traffic light systems operate on a timing mechanism that changes the lights after a given interval. An intelligent traffic light system senses the presence or absence of vehicles and reacts accordingly. The idea behind intelligent traffic systems is that drivers will not spend unnecessary time waiting for the traffic lights to change. Since the waiting time of the vehicles for the lights to change is optimal, the emission of carbon monoxide from the vehicles is reduced. This will give a positive effect to the green house effect towards the environment. The system developed is able to sense the presence or absence of vehicles within certain range by setting the appropriate duration for the traffic signals to react accordingly. The system can help to solve the problem of traffic congestion.…

Traffic consists of pedestrians, street cars, ridden animals, bicycles and other motor vehicles. The enhancement of technology and the start of urbanization have transformed the standard living of individuals in travelling and moving goods and commodities from one place to another. These changes brought difficulty and problem of travelling due to the unavoidable traffic congestions especially at rush hours. However, traffic problems are part of daily life of motorists these days. Typical events which disrupt the flow of traffic into a disorganized mess such as road construction, collisions and debris in the roadway are the cause of road user’s frustrations.…
