By 1978 the thirty-year war that had been fought between Egypt and Israel had come to a point where there was a chance for peace. The area that had been at the center of the turmoil was the West Bank of the Jordan River and the Gaza Strip. The problem was that both countries believed that they had the rights to this land: Israel, biblically and Egypt, politically. So an invitation by President Jimmy Carter to President Anwar Sadat of Egypt and Prime Minister Menachem Begin of Israel was extended. The invitation was for a meeting in the Catoctin Mountains of Maryland at the presidential retreat, Camp David. The meeting was so that the framework of a peace agreement, known as the Camp David Accord, could be laid out between Sadat and Begin, with Carter as the mediator. Both Sadat and Begin had their reputations and their countries' futures on the line, not to mention the future of the Middle East. All of the countries…

Within philosophy, the idea that power results from physical and situational force is known as moral realism, of which Callicles is essentially the founder. Simplistically, as Callicles asserts within "Gorgias," the powerful, and subsequently just ruler, is one who exerts force to maintain influence. Thus, following this line of thought, might makes right. Throughout the dialogue, however, Socrates repeatedly argues that temperance overrides brute force. He suggests instead, that control over our desires, such as the desire to rule according to individual belief rather than the majority's benefit, is true power. He also makes it clear that power hungry, inconsiderate leaders have no true strength, because according to Socrates, a ruler who cannot control his own convictions has no control in any other aspects of life. However, despite the philosophical logic of these assertions, leaders even today unthinkingly rely on armies and weapons to enforce their personal (and not always authentic) views of justice.…

This shows his importance because a normal person without any divine powers is unlikely to get help from a god or goddess such as Athena. Odysseus proves his help from the gods by explaining to his son Telemachus, “ suppose Athena’s arm is over us and Zeus her father’s,” ( Homer Part 2). Athena helps Odysseus by assisting him with valuable information for his journey home. In the hero’s journey this same concept is explained, “ a character who has mastered the laws of the outside world and come back to bestow wisdom upon them,” ( Campbell 3). The hero’s journey is just like this when Athena explains how and what will happen when Odysseus returns…

In the ancient world, there is barely any autonomy in a modern sense but it is beginning to be considered. Oedipus possesses his own use of knowledge rather then religious superstition to solve the problem of the Sphinx that had been plaguing Thebes, although Oedipus has followed the traditional responsibilities in serving the city. Oedipus’s and Socrates beliefs have ended them in death. Socrates, like Oedipus, also take a somewhat sceptical attitude toward the divine or at least toward the traditional gods of Athens. It is important to remember that Socrates accepts the truth of the oracle not simply on its authority as divine, as the word of the god, but only because it passes the test of human…

The Greek civilization had developed a new form of government; democracy that contrasted from the bureaucracy in Han China. As shown in Document 7, the Han dynasty stresses a strong central government with many appointed governors to each district its dynasty possesses. However, the Athenian government was based on the people, so they basically governed themselves (Document 5). Also displayed in Document 8, they way the government is set up, anyone who has his own business has business in the government. That way if that person does not have any affairs at all is not involved in the government. Although in Document 6, the way anyone is in government is chosen by the heavens. This directly relates to how these civilization’s forms of governance are completely different. Pericles believes that democracy is the best government system because he displays an array of ways in which the government is of the people, such as “in settling of private disputes, everyone is equal before law” (Document 4). The Ancient Greece map in Document 1 displays an inaccurate proportion of size to the Han empire map that makes it seem that the Athenians controlled as much territory as the Han, where in reality they only controlled about a twelfth of the land that the Han did. There is no document that portrays a Chinese philosopher that may have his life in danger for the ideas he has.…

Lord Acton, a great historian and politician, once said, “Power tends to corrupt, and absolute power corrupts absolutely. Great men are almost always bad men.” Clearly Acton echoed William Shakespeare, as this theme was portrayed in The Tragedy of Julius Caesar. Throughout the play, complacency amongst civilians, mutiny, and struggles for power plague the ancient city of Rome, all of which are deeply rooted in the corruption surrounding the government at the time. Shakespeare ultimately reveals that power corrupts, not only the individual who has it, but the society without.…

But, as mentioned previously, Sophocles was also an important man in Athenian government, his play demonstrating an overall obedience to the law. In Oedipus the King, for example, although Oedipus cannot escape his fate, nowhere is his rule of Thebes called into question. Oedipus, at first a stranger to Thebes, is accepted as king because he is deemed the noblest among them. “I became a citizen among you, citizens,” reveals that he has been chosen to be king, not out of some divine right, but through some democratic…
