He has a museum of items appertaining to the Jew. A Jew’s harp, of course: four in fact, one dating from the 18th century, its tongue still miraculously intact. Three dried specimens of the Jew’s Ear fungus. He would like to have a living one, has tried on more than one occasion to keep one alive, but they grow only on certain trees and his apartment is small, with no garden. On his windowsill, however, high above Manhattan, careful tending has allowed a large pot of Jew’s Mallow to thrive; its furled yellow flowers return year after year. He does not know why it is better to have a living specimen than a dead one, only that it is so.…

In Lord of The Flies by William Golding, A Tale of Two Cites by Charles Dickens, and Into Thin Air by Jon Krakauer people in power use their position to corrupt others. This suggests people should be mindful who they put in power. In these novels the authors show that no matter what age, race, social status, or even gender a person is, if given some-kind of power and competition they have the potential to become corrupt. Also, these three writings demonstrate that fear gives the ability to control people or a person.…

Cath stayed isolated and did not care about the outside world except for her fan fiction story Carry On. Cath stayed in her room writing her story without knowing where the dining room was. Her roommate, Reagan, helped her out by showing her around and to meet others. Cath soon realized her mistakes and although it was not easy finally adjusted to the beginning of college. College is not an easy adjustment for everyone. It could mean a roommate who is the total opposite of you, not knowing what to do with your freedom or being scared to leave your comfort zone. As shown through the story Fangirl, everyone has challenges or fears that they will face sooner or later. Everyone has different ways of showing and dealing with their fears. Some people isolate themselves to stay in their comfort zone, others try to escape by being social. In this situation I am more like Cath. I fear many things as I start college, but I am also very excited about starting college. I am more like Cath because I like staying in my comfort zone. I am better at doing things alone and am not the best at starting conversations. One of my biggest fears, therefore, is finding the right group of friends that I can call that. Another big fear that I have…

Moving houses or apartments is something I have done five times since I moved to Oregon three years ago and is about to be something I am going to do again at the end of term and then during the fall when I transfer schools. These things are closely interconnected for me in this situation. Since moving is not a pleasant experience I put off packing this is then followed by…

This is not fair because some people who just do not like their roommates are able to switch rooms and others that actually get into fights with their roommates are not always able to switch rooms. To fix this problem, I would use the conflict resolution system of mediation. I would use mediation because the roommates would be able to talk their problems out and see if they can come to an agreement without them having to switch rooms. This process I would call Roommate Mediation and this process would work by when one of the roommates is having a problem with the other one they would go to their RA on their floor. The RA would then ask both people if they are willing to attend a mediation session. If they both agree to mediation, then the RA would ask them when it would be an appropriate time for them to meet. The mediation would take place in the study rooms which there is one on each floor of the residence hall. I think this would be a good place for the mediation process to take place because the rooms are quiet, the roommates would feel safe, and there is plenty of…

Imagine freshmen year in college. It’s filled with fun an excitement. You no longer live at home; you are living in a dorm with all people your age. Now imagine living in a room with three people. These people have completely different schedules than you. Some of you stay up late and some try to go to bed early. Some like loud noises while they sleep; others need complete silence. Well I can imagine this situation very well because I have been living with three roommates since the beginning of the semester.…
