Pros And Cons Of Being Lactose Intolerant
1. Being lactose intolerant means that people cannot digest lactose products properly. This condition effects people at all different levels. The symptoms being shown with this are bloating, diarrhea, gas, and nausea. This condition is due to the large intestine not being able to break down the lactose into glucose, because of the lack of enzyme lactase. In order for the large intestine to work properly it needs certain dairy products such as yogurt to help with digestion. When a person id lactose intolerant they will have to substitute these types of dairy products with probiotics in order to help sustain the proper digestion being performed in the large intestine. Refined grains is the opposite of whole grains. It is certain parts of grains that are refined and modified, by which it is no longer a pure and natural substance for the the body to break down. What is taken out of the natural grain are two substances; bran and germ. Due to this the additives put in to substitute are iron and thiamin. Due to this process, refined grains are less nutrient based than whole grains. The grain amaranth originated from Latin America and was smuggled to Asia. It was called “king seed” or “seed sent by god” due to its taste. The kernels are very small and look similar to caviar when they are cooked. As of today, amaranth is more known in south America and is sold on the streets. It also contains a good amount of protein and has no gluten. My reaction to the first video was that companies that have high fructose corn syrup are being mislabeled of carrying products that are really bad for their kids. So the overall idea of the commercial is to stop the rumor that people assume high fructose corn syrup is really bad for kid’s health. It makes it relatable to parents by displaying ignorance over factual and scientific evidence in a condescending way. The second video displays the same feeling of being misinformed or uneducated on high fructose corn syrup, but puts it in a very condescending and humiliating way, which makes it comical. Both HFCS and sucrose contain carbohydrates. But sucrose contains more glucose and HFCS is considered a monosaccharide. HFCS contains six oxygen atoms, 12 hydrogen atoms, and six carbon atoms. Among industrial uses of corn, High Fructose Corn Syrup (HFCS) is the most controversial one from an ethics perspective. HFCS is an artificial sweetener that is found in a wide range of processed foods. It is produced by applying enzymatic processes to convert corn’s glucose into fructose. HCFS is used as a sweetener in various foods and beverages such as yogurts, breakfast bars, cereals, breads, soups, lunch meats, and soft drinks. Since 1970s, it has become the most economical alternative to cane sugar and replaced most of its use as an industrial sweetener. Due to quotas on domestic increased tariffs on sugar imports, the US has the highest price for sugar around the world while government subsidies to corn production make HFCS a much cheaper alternative to sugar. Moreover, HFCS is easy to transport, %20 sweeter than table sugar, and extends the shelf life of products. As a result, HFCS has become a major substitute for cane sugar for the U.S industry such that soft drink giants like Coke and Pepsi use HFCS in their products instead of sugar since 1984.
