When planning to spend four or more years at an institution for higher learning, one must consider if the education they are receiving is proper or fits one’s schedule. Thankfully, the three colleges listed above all outline or fit my interest in business well. Two of the three, Wharton and Cornell, both have dedicated undergraduate colleges for business. While Columbia University does not have a school for undergraduate business, students are able to major in the business strand while learning at Columbia’s business school (Learn). Where Columbia shines is not its business strand, but rather its world-renown core curriculum. Columbia’s core curriculum ‘consists of seminars comprised of literature, philosophy, history, music, art, writing, science that train analysis, argument, quantitative reasoning, logical inference, and creative thinking. (Core Curriculum)’ The school may not prepare one to be a business expert after graduation, but trains each student to be creative, critical, and bright thinkers who are vital in any management, economics, or leadership position. How do the colleges rank statistically? Wharton has been consistently ranked in the top five business schools in America consecutively by US News and World Report, with many of the nominations being first place (University of Pennsylvania, Wharton). As the first business oriented college in America, its prestige is no doubt. According to US News, Columbia is also extremely competitive with Wharton. Although it is not ranked under the top undergraduate schools for business due to there not being a dedicated undergraduate business school, Columbia’s strong graduate school opportunities along with the valuable knowledge in its core curriculum as well as the generally high rankings that the university receives definitely makes it one university to consider. Cornell, although not as prestigious as the other two and ranked a bit lower on the US News scale, still holds water as number 9 in US News’ undergraduate business rankings.
