Monsanto has won every single case. The company was awarded nearly $24 million from just 72 of those judgments, the Center for Food Safety found. This happens because genetically modified crops contaminate nearby organic crops through fertilization, allowing the owner of the product to claim rights over the contaminated crops. This deprives farmers from the ownership of their original seeds and plants, making Monsanto the new legal owner is now entitled to all the profits of that harvest. But how can a small farmer stand up against a corporate giant such as Monsanto? They can’t. Many small farmers who could not afford legal representation have been forced to accept out-of-court settlements. Many farmers are also bullied out business by Monsanto through lawsuits, or are forced to adopt genetically modified Monsanto products, becoming a slave of a corporation.
Monsanto’s practices both in the courtroom and on the farm have made the company increasingly the target of criticism in recent years, and a series of affairs in Washington has done little to weaken the opposition. But what can you expect from a multi-billion dollar corporation. Hopefully someday corporations will make better choices in order to help society and not their ambitious
