The Pruitt Igoe Myth was very intriguing. I never knew about Pruitt Igoe. My aunt lives in St. Louis and I have visited a couple of times. I wonder if my family and I drove past where Pruitt Igoe used to be. We probably have and I just did not know it. It was interesting
to hear the personal stories about living in Pruitt Igoe. Personally, I am not a fan of government housing. However, I noticed that one of the things that went wrong with Pruitt Igoe was that the government stopped sending maintenance and cleaning people to take care of things. I think that if the government had made a stipulation of living in Pruitt Igoe to be that the tenants divvy up the chores necessary to keep Pruitt Igoe running then maybe it could have worked. Most of the tenants could handle sweeping the halls once in a while. Then for things like fixing the elevator, a maintenance person could teach a few people everything they would need to know about fixing elevators and then those few would pass it on. The people became used to depending on the government to clean the place. So when the government stopped sending people to clean, Pruitt Igoe became gross. I know that was only one of the problems, though. Either way, it was interesting to learn about it.
