EGO
ensures that the impulses of the id can be expressed in a manner acceptable in the real world. functions in both the conscious, preconscious, and unconscious mind.
Judges the circumstance and chooses id vs. superego
ID
only component of personality that is present from birth. entirely unconscious and includes of the instinctive and primitive behaviors.
EROS
“light/creative force” – erotic energy—dominated by sexual drives supposedly because the meaning of life is to reproduce driven by the Libido Principle that tells the psyche to avoid pain and seek pleasure
THANATOS
“dark/destructive force” – thanotic energy – dominated by violence and aggression
Internalized
*positive: using eros to overcome the negative
*negative: doing drugs, drinking, self harm/suicide, etc.
Externalized
*positive: going to the gym, jogging, exercise
*negative: beating someone up, killing people/homicide
SUPEREGO
game face internalized social/societal norms, values, customs
REPRESSION
repress the id’s drives
SUBLIMATION
accidentally, the id’s drives are exposed
