Public High School Start Time Analysis
Charles Kendall Adams, an American educator and historian, once said, “no student ever attains very eminent success by simply doing what is required of him: it is the amount and excellence of doing the over and above what is required that determines the great and ultimate distinction.” Simply, Charles Kendall Adams meant that no student could excel in school unless they have access to every opportunity and are willing to go beyond what is required of them. The first public high school opened in 1821; however, the structure of schooling has changed drastically since the creation of public school. One of the biggest changes that has occurred since 1821 is the start time of school. Many people do not believe the start time of school has any impact …show more content…
One example of this is when people claim changing the start time would cost too much money (Morin). The problem with this statement is that it places the emphasis on money rather than the students. This becomes an issue, because schools should always place the student at the center of education. Another issue that can come up when discussing changing the start time is that it will affect the middle school and elementary school start times as well (Morin). Although this might be a problem, it would also help the young children. This is because kids work better later in the day, so all of the benefits would apply to them as well. A final argument one might have is that the students will not spend the extra time sleeping (Morin). This statement might be true for some; however, it gives the students time in the morning to study, time to wake up, or time to prepare for the hard day ahead. When it comes to the time school starts, there will always be differing points of view. Yet one must think of the wellbeing of the students before anything else. Although many people believe that starting school later is a waste of time, there are many benefits, which prove this statement incorrect. The health benefits that starting school later would allow are very important. The student’s would have less stress and would be able to get a better night’s sleep. Having less tardies and greater attendance would also give the student the ability to improve their grades and the students safety. Starting school later has always been an option; schools should make it a priority to improve students’

One reason we should not start school later is because of the lack of time students are left with after school. Coming home to a mountain of homework is a lot of pressure, especially when you must start it late in the afternoon. Justin O’neill from Scholastic Scope article, “Should schools start later?” agrees with this. He says, “Starting school later means dismissing school later. This can interfere with bus schedules, after school activities, and family time” (20). This demonstrates that the amount of time lost in the morning adds up, and it interferes with your personal life. But that is not…

“42 states reported that most (75%-100%) public schools started before 8:30 a.m” (“Schools Start Too Early”). Most schools start before 8:30. A decent amount of schools start around 7:20. Schools start early in the day and release later in the afternoon. This has become routine, but studies show that students who start early in the day perform worse in school compared to those who start later in the day. Schools should implement a later start time for higher schoolers since high schoolers would get around the recommended amount of sleep, preventing sleeping in school and high schoolers academics and safety will increase, since they will get enough sleep to study before school and prevent drowsiness.…

I think school should started later because kids need a full sleep. I think if school started later kids would learn better and not sleep in class. A later school start time has a positive effect on students’ grades. A later start gives students a longer attention span and a better morning.Schools should make sure their students are well rested and ready for a long day of learning. School should start later in the morning so students can get a full recommended nine and a half hours of sleep. When students must wake up early enough to get to class by 8 am, the result can be a severe sleep deficit. A delayed start time could help teens sleep during their natural sleep/wake cycles. Teens may be less likely to depend on caffeine to stay awake…

It has been debated whether a later start time in school would be beneficial to the students or not. While some believe changing the start time would fail to have an effect on anything (or even have negative consequences), others argue that students could have multiple benefits to a later start time. Later school start times positively affect students because they become more involved with school, decreases bad behaviors, and increases the moods of the children.…

In conclusion, if the school start time is pushed back, our after school activities are pushed back, we will get home later and we will have less time to study and we will get less sleep. Starting school later in the morning does NOT give us more time to sleep. We will be forced to stay up later to study for the big test, to finish the project, and to do the thirty math problems we haven’t made a dent in yet because we haven’t had TIME. We will be waking up an hour earlier to finish homework we were too tired to get done the night before and we will end up getting less…

People who think switching the schedules would be hard because then they would run into elementary school schedules and then buses wouldn’t be able to get everyone home on time if the schools shared buses between elementary school and middle school. Although, a solution to this would be to just simply switch the elementary school schedules to earlier. Though some people might say that it wouldn’t be fair to just make younger kids go to school earlier. Though according to www.npr.com, “kids before their teen years don’t need to sleep in as long and don’t stay up as late. This is because their bodies sleep schedule haven’t shifted yet. Teens automatically stay up later, making it hard to get to sleep before 10:30, and sleep in later, making it difficult to wake up before 8:00.” So, this is why it would be easier for an elementary school student to wake up earlier. In addition, according to sleepfoundation.org, “teens are sleep deprived because of early start times.” By just simply switching middle school start times with elementary school start times , which would be a solution to the bus problem, schools could make sure teens are getting the recommended amount of…
