Afghanistan a landlocked mountainous country with plains in the north and southwest. The Pul-e-Charkhi Prison also known as Pul-i-Charkhi or Afghan National Detention Facility, is the largest prison in Afghanistan to the east of Kabul. 1970s was followed by a series of civil wars that devastated much of Afghanistan which began when the country became a socialist state under the influence of the Soviet Union during the Soviet–Afghan War. Construction of the jail began in the 1970s by order of former president Mohammed Daoud Khan and was completed during the 1980s.
