The independent variable, which the scientist controls, is the type of music, such as classical, pop, rap, and heavy metal. The dependent variable, which is determined by the independent variable, is the subject’s pulse (bpm). The control group is listening to no music, since this is when a subject experiences a resting pulse. This control group will be compared to the four experimental groups, which are: listening to classical music, listening to pop music, listening to rap music, and listening to heavy metal music. The three constants in this experiment, which are kept the same for each trial, include the time listening to music, the time between each trial, and the volume of the music.
