A puppy mill is a place where dogs are forced to breed where they are not supervised and are very aggressive with each other. Puppies in puppy mills have no socialization or space in which to move ("10 Things To Know About Puppy Mills | Facts and Statistics"). Inevitably, when one puppy is sick, all of the other puppies get sick too. Many puppies have genetic illnesses such as hip dysplasia and autoimmune diseases. Ninety-nine percent of puppies sold in pet stores are sick (“Top Reasons to Adopt a Pet”). Puppy millers do not care about the puppies, only the money. Every female dog is bred twice a year. When they can not breed anymore, they are euthanized. Puppy millers make over $300,000 a year and euthanize over 2.7 million dogs and cats every year ("Top Reasons to Adopt a Pet”). The puppy would be healthier because it would have gotten its vaccinations before being adopted. Puppy mills can be stopped if puppies are adopted from pet shelters. If no puppies from pet shops were sold, fewer puppies would be bred. The puppies who were born would have a better temperament because they would have less separation anxiety, would be well trained, and would not be as aggressive.
Adoption saves the lives of puppies. A rescue puppy often becomes his master’s best friend and companion. Because this new member of the family is very healthy, the family will be able to love it for many years. Even though saving a puppy’s life is the most important thing, there are also many other benefits.
