The Ramayana is a story told since ancient Indian times, it was first used to convey religious beliefs to Hindu. Nowadays, many know of Rama’s journey and recognize that there are deeper morals embedded under the story. What may be those morals? Purpose, passion, and integrity. To live with a purpose is to have as one’s intention or goal in life. To have passion is to have a strong feeling that causes one to act, simultaneously challenging yet intriguing. Last but not least, integrity is being honest and having strong moral principles, such as doing the right deed even when nobody is watching. Jatayu encountered Rama, Lakshmana, and Sita in their exile, and pledged to guard the lives of them in honor of Dasaratha. Sita was captured by Ravana, Jatayu saw and confronted Ravana. Jatayu fought Ravana even though Ravanna was not affected by the blows. Ravana deeply wounded Jatayu , and was able to run away with Sita. Jatayu was dying but “with an effort of will, kept himself alive until Rama and Lakshmana, searching for Sita, came that way. With his dying breath, Jatayu gave an account of what he witnessed [to Rama]” (89). Jatayu’s purpose was to protect Sita and did so till he was physically unable to. Jatayu did not talk about how brave he was protecting Sita or how much pain he was in, most importantly, used his dying breath to give as much information as he could about the abduction instead of using it to talk about personal desires and wills before departing the earth. Displaying that this pledge was Jatayu’s purpose in life and would not die till he was satisfied with it. It shows the audience selflessness, and that he died for a good cause through his purpose. Though one’s purpose may not be remotely similar to Jatayu’s, purpose gives satisfaction and drive in people’s lives, such as Jatayu’s, in which they are able to go peacefully in doing what one could have done in their path of purpose. Jatayu’s act of fighting till death was brave and inspires people to live with
