1. Based on the psychoanalytic perspective, Carlos’s superego which consists of our standards/morals was suppressing his id which is involved in self-indulgence. The conflict between the two interacting systems that struggled to satisfy Carlos’s impulses while maintaining an extent of restraint probably could have caused Carlos to develop the paralysis in his right arm.
2a. Defense mechanisms are tactics humans use indirectly and subconsciously to in some way distort their reality with the intention of reducing or removing a stressful situation in their lives.

I. Regression- The person returns to a childlike state (or past psychological state) to escape present anxiety-inducing situations.
II. Reaction formation- A person using this defense mechanism deals with anxiety in the exact opposite way they feel, for example like laughing hysterically when a priceless possession of theirs has been stolen.
III. Projection- This person would disguise their own deplorable thoughts/feelings and behaviors by projecting them onto others.
IV. Rationalization- The person would pardon their offensive behaviors/actions by providing themselves with understated, unreliable excuses and ignore the real reasons behind their actions.
V. Displacement- One would use this defense mechanism to avoid harm by diverging their inappropriate actions towards a more acceptable or harmless object/ person instead.
VI. Denial- Many people exhibit this defense mechanism, which is the denial of painful events in an effort to protect themselves.
