To maintain good health, you need a regular intake of nutrients. Nutrients take the form of two substances; macronutrients and micronutrients.
Macronutrients are made up of carbohydrates, proteins and fat. Large amounts are needed.
Carbohydrates are divided into two categories; simple and complex. Simple carbohydrates are sugar molecules that provide a quick realise of energy, they are easily broken down. Complex carbohydrates take longer to break down and are either starch or fibre molecules.
Micronutrients consist of both minerals and vitamins. Vitamins are divided into two categories; fat soluble vitamins A, D, E, K and water soluble C, B vitamins. They are only needed in small quantities.

Karim and CHD
Karim is a sixty eight year old British Asian man who has been suffering from angina. Karim was advised of certain lifestyle changes that would benefit him and his condition, Karim chose to ignore this advice. He was later rushed to hospital having suffered a major heart attack. Coronary heart disease (CHD) is the single most common cause of premature death in the United Kingdom (DH, 2000).
Karim’s father and uncles have a history of heart problems. This indicates karim would be at a much higher risk of heart complications than someone who has no genetic history of heart problems.
Excess body weight and lack of exercise could have affected Karim’s health. Karim should seek diet and exercise advice appropriate to his condition.
Karim also suffers from high cholesterol; this is a major contributor to CHD due to the fat that is carried to his coronary arteries where it may clot.
Karim’s age puts him at a much higher risk from heart diseases such as
