I: Design Title: The Mass of Quartz
Purpose: To determine the density slope for water and alcohol and apply the understanding to determine the volume of a quartz sample without measuring the volume or calculating it.
Hypothesis: The hypothesis of this lab was by using the density of alcohol we could calculate the density of a quartz samples.
Controls and Variables: Independent variable: Volume of water and alcohol Dependent variable: The weight of the liquid or solid Controls: The volume of the water should be the same each trial
Materials: Triple Beam Balance, Graduated cylinder, Beaker, Quartz, Distilled water, rubbing alcohol
Procedure:
1. Find the mass of the empty graduated cylinder.
2. Fill then graduated …show more content…
Conclusion and Evaluation
Conclusion:
The purpose of this lab was to investigate the density slope for water and alcohol and apply the understanding to determine the volume of a quartz sample without measuring the volume of the sample or calculating. The hypothesis of this lab was by figuring out the mass of water and alcohol we could use the data to find the density of a quartz samples.
Evaluation:
In this lab there we some flaws with measuring volume and calculating mass and volume. The main problem was measuring, because we used the beaker it made measuring difficult because it had a wide opening and it’s hard to find the meniscus. The other flaw of this lab was the calculations the group had found were sometimes wrong such as forgetting to subtract by the correct number.
Improvements:
This lab could have been improved by using a graduated cylinder to measure the volume of the liquid that was used in this lab. This lab could have also been better if the group had double checked their calculations and had other teammates check their work.
