Personal development is an essential tool to increasing both your knowledge base and the physical skills required of an effective care worker. An effective way of monitoring your own development is to reflect on how you carry out your work activities and to identify your strengths and any areas that may require further development.
Recognising areas of your work that need improvement is not a sign of poor practice, it is a sign of excellent practice. The purpose of reflective practice is to improve and develop practice, knowledge and skills by thinking about what you have done. Reflection helps us to realise new ideas and make new sense of practice issues.
Everything you do in your work is part of the learning process. Regular tasks can be important for learning because there is something different each time you do them. Appraisal – usually takes place every 12 months and may be carried out by your supervisor or a more senior member of staff. In-house and external training and development – this can include single days on specialist areas, ongoing courses with several sessions and attendance at college for formal qualifications
