Maybe this was the best technique (the scare tactic) for Mr. Patel to teach his children about what not to do. His kids might be scarred for life but at least they learned a very valuable lesson. Pi says later in the scene on how his mother had her hand over his chest as his heart was beating fast. When Mr. Patel said “Never forget this lesson,” that is when I knew it was going to be both a brutal and unforgettable scene for everyone there. Mr. Patel knew it was going to be hard for his kids, but sometimes you have to go too far to get your point across. Some people just do not listen until it happens, doing this might have just saved young Pi or Ravi’s life. At his old school, Piscine was called “pissing” and every time he was in the corner they would ask him if he was pissing. This would make anyone mad, and at the new school Piscine went to, he looked at it like a new opportunity, a new beginning. He went on in this scene to say how he did it in each of his classes. This develops Piscine as a character that is hard headed and refuses to get belittled by another person. In reality, no one likes being bullied or made fun of, you can say it does not affect you but deep down it hurts. Going to a new school was probably best for Pi and maybe going up to the board was a very bold move and took a lot in him but at the end of the day it what was best for him.
