Introduction
Social construction theory is concerned with how people think about and even uses categories to structure people’s experiences and their analysis of the world (Giddens, Duneier, & Appelbaum, 2003). Social categories such as stereotypes and social ideas are socially constructed then they are accepted as the new reality even though there are facts to those situations. There are various ethnicity or race depictions in various TV shows globally which are influenced by various groups’ social ideas or social categories. Some of them detest gay people, and they ridicule them in the society irrespective of whether they are family members or not. This factor is common mostly to black communities whom majority believes is something that is wrong and shows weaknesses in the masculinity (Greenberg, Mastro & Brand, 2002). In Empire, when Luscious discovers that his son Smallest is gay, hates him and even throws him into a dustbin. The child grows up without love from the father and feels rejected. His father does not want him in his life because of his sexual preferences. This is similar to Haves and Have-nots where Veronica a black woman refuses to accept the idea that his son is gay. She forces him to sleep with girls when he is not interested. She even threatens him with disinheriting him if he continues to have sexual relations with males. He detests the idea that his son is gay and does not even want to hear about it. In Murder in the first, some individuals are afraid to acknowledge that they are gay as they know how the society reacts to such people. Hence, some social constructs and stereotypes in the society shape the way people react to situations in the society. The African American community believes that people should only be attracted to people of opposite sex and that this new behavior is from the whites. Lastly, Haves and Have not’s a black guy is harassed by a white police officer because he is gay. He blames and treats the guy negatively because he is gay and he detests gay people in the society although he is also gay though because of society’s perception of gays’ he cannot come
