Rachel Cruz Speech
“She’s a college freshman with a new BMW and she went into debt for it!” said Rachel Cruze at the beginning of her financial planning workshop at Texas A&M University-Commerce. She was politely describing the reckless spending that is prevalent among college students, and came to our university to raise awareness concerning the major debt crises among her young audience. She came to the university on October 11, and stood on stage in the Ferguson Auditorium to give college students, and other individuals, advice about how to efficiently manage finances. As the daughter of renown financial planner Dave Ramsey, Cruze offered proven financial management methods to the crowd. Although she gave several key points to financial freedom, her main topic was urging college students to go into as little debt as possible.
Throughout the speech, Cruze had a very genuine tone. It was like she actually cared about the futures of those in the crowd. She emphasized that financial freedom only comes through gratitude. She

Being a college student is difficult for me, because my mom is not here to tell me what I should and should not purchase. However, I will heed Cruze’s advice, and stop comparing myself to others on social media, and in person. Yes, I do drive a used car, but after hearing the wise words of Cruze, I am now proud to drive a used car. I know that I have to make a choice between spending my money and saving it, and I intend to save whenever possible to minimize financial stress in the future. Listening to Cruze speak about financial management made me realize that it is never too early to start budgeting and saving. I thoroughly enjoyed her presentation, plus while I was there I won a copy of her newest book Love Your Life, Not Theirs: 7 Money Habits for Living the Life You Want. Thus, I will be reading about her advice more extensively and applying it to my own life and

I owe $40,000, I owe $60,000, I owe $100,000. Isn’t that a lot of money for one person to owe? Graduates have been faced with a serious problem brought about by the constant borrowing of money to gain a reputable education. The debt of loans varies from person to person but the extreme amounts that individuals owe is something the media finds worth gossiping about. Little does the public know, in reality, all the commotion and conversation about these debts are not accountable for the majority of college borrowers. According to A Lifetime of Student Debt? Not Likely by Robin Wilson, she intrigues her targeted college audience by giving examples and providing awareness that most individuals are paying back their students loans within a timely manner with just a few sacrifices. Wilson emphasizes that the real reason individuals have an outstanding debt is because “they are determined to attend their dream college, no matter the cost” (257). There are various reasons why students take out loans and Wilson is determined to clear up the confusion of student debt, she encourages college students to take out loans even with media’s negativity, and lastly she tries to enlighten this targeted college group that debts are repayable with additional sacrifices but in the end, that debt was the best decision they have ever made.…

Wilson uses specific examples to enhance her argument that not all college graduates leave drowning in debt, and that most pay off loans quietly and without complaint. She tells several stories of real people who graduated college with substantial debt but were able to adjust and manage their debt and move on with their lives. When Wilson tells the story of the outspoken lawyer that accumulated over $100,000 in loan debt and his argument to have the government relieve him of his debt, she is using him as an example to lead into her argument. The lawyer is one of many college graduates that argue that the system is flawed and unfair to those who have to pay them off for the rest of their lives. Wilson disagrees with these people and uses several examples to prove her opinion. She quotes Michael S. McPherson as saying “There are some really poignant, painful stories… But they aren’t the typical American experience” (257). Wilson also tells the story of Jill McCusker, who graduated with $30,000 in debt. She says that McCusker simply adjusted her plan and lived at home for a while longer while paying off her loans. She is proving her point that it is possible to pay off your debt and continue with your life. Lastly, Wilson points out the huge difference between undergraduate debt and professional-school debt. She says that professional-school debt is “typically much, much higher” (259). Wilson does well at supporting…

Sixty-eight percent of adults with student loans and whose children have loans are unhappy with the way they financed their own or their children's college(Journal of Accountancy). Sixty-eight percent, that is a disturbingly high number, that means that six out of ten students right now will regret how they paid for college and consequently will lead them along to the wagon that is debt. If we are to stop the rising influx of debt: teaching students about how to operate their finances in college will result in a reduction of students with…

This year, in my final year of highschool, I have been faced with many decisions and, as a result, have grown as a person. One of the most eye opening experiences I’ve encountered thus far is the Rachel’s Challenge presentation back in September. Although it was only an hour and a half, the tale of Rachel Scott, the first victim of the Columbine shooting, has heavily influenced my philosophy on life. Rachel lived her life in way she hoped to change the world, by following her “Code of Ethics.” She believed that compassion and trust were key to this goal, that by simply being kind she could ‘start a chain reaction.’ Taking from her example I have developed my own code to live by that can be neatly summed up by the phrase: Change begins with…

After Susan Wong graduated from State University with a degree in Operations Research, she went to work for a computer systems development firm in the Washington, D.C., area. As a student at State, Susan paid her normal monthly living expenses for apartment rent, food, and entertainment out of a bank account set up by her parents. Each month they would deposit a specific amount of cash into Susan's account. Her parents also paid her gas, telephone, and bank credit card bills, which were sent directly to them. Susan never had to worry about things like health, car, homeowners', and life insurance; utilities; driver's and car licenses; magazine subscriptions; and so on. Thus, while she was used to spending within a specific monthly budget in college, she was unprepared for the irregular monthly liabilities she encountered once she got a job and was on her own.…
