Racial Reparations
“Logically, if someone deserves reparation then necessarily someone has acted wrongly and harmed or injured him as a result (Boxill).” Without any question, African Americans are a group that over many years has been acted wrongly against. Thomas Jefferson was one of the first people to come up with the idea of giving reparations to black slaves, and the idea was soon ended by Thaddeus Stevens who said that blacks deserve these reparations, but even if reparations were given, it would just not be enough.
Slavery originated in Jamestown, Virginia when a Dutch ship brought twenty Africans to the shore allowing slavery to quickly spread among the nation. They were originally brought to America to aid in the production of certain crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo plantations. Through the 17th and 18th century, slavery was practiced throughout American colonies and these African American slaves helped build the economic foundation of a new nation. When the cotton gin was invented in 1793, slavery became an important, if not crucial part to the economy in the South. “Though the U.S. Congress outlawed the African slave trade in 1808, the domestic trade flourished, and the slave population in the U.S. nearly tripled over the next 50 years. By 1860 it had reached nearly 4 million, with more than half living in the cotton-producing states of the South (History Channel).” At this time in history, slaves were accounted for one-third of the South’s population. Slave owners made it their job to make sure that their slaves were completely dependent on them. Slaves were not allowed to read or write, and marriage between slaves did not have a legal basis. Many slave owners also took sexual liberties with slave women and made them perform behaviors as “favors” to the master. Slaves were forced to work long hours in high temperatures without an adequate amount of food. Not only were they seen as inhuman, they

Slavery began in America to aid in crop production, which at that time was just beginning. The first slaves were brought over to the American colony of Jamestown. These African slaves were brought over to replace servants because the slaves were cheaper, and there was a higher supply. Slavery was used over the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and they ultimately provided a foundation for our economy. The agrarian south had great conditions for farming, which caused the farming industry to go up. With inventions like the cotton gin, this economic boom solidified the importance of slavery to the south. The slave trade began, and while some slaves were treated better than others, many slaves were treated as an equivalent to the scum they scraped off the bottom of their owner's shoes.…

Slavery in America began in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1619, to aid in the collection of tobacco crops. But with the invention of the cotton gin in 1793, the importance of slavery only grew until its reliance would divide the nation in the American Civil War (“Slavery in America”). Most who know anything about slavery in America know this basic this basic information, but there is information that is not just common sense. In 1620, most Africans were indentured servants instead of slaves and by 1640, after a specified time of servitude, the indentured servants would become freeman and would then have land and indentured servants on their own. It was not until 1660 that there was a definite answer to what Africans were which was Africans = Negros = Slaves. Slaves overtook indentured servants as the predominate work in the 18th century because masters would have to repurchase and retrain new indentured servants, while slaves would work for the master…

Before the Civil War and Reconstruction, slavery ran rapid throughout the United States. Slave owners treated their slaves as animals and deemed them as barbarian. It is argued that since it would have been cheaper if Whites had others perform free labor, Whites would have traded goods and war prisoners with the African leaders. The result of this, created a system of slavery far more degrading than any other form of servitude in mankind. Enslavement caused men and women to write about their lives in captivity so that it could be past down to the generations. Each one of the narratives gave readers a first-hand account of how blacks were treated. These specific narratives…

Slaves in the Antebellum South had many restrictions placed on them, including on their marriage. According to Tera W. Hunter, New York Times author, “Back in 1860, marriage was a civil right and a legal contract, available only to free people. Male slaves had no paternal rights and female slaves were recognized as mothers only to the extent that their status doomed their children’s fate to servitude in perpetuity” (Hunter). Slaves were forced to live under the terms of their master that controlled their relationship. Despite this, many slave families held high family values and often worked hard as a result of their master allowing them to have a family.…

What was slavery in America for blacks? When an individual hears or reads this question, what goes through this persons’ mind? For many, like myself, they immediately think of bad conditions, beatings, ripping people from their homeland and racism. Three major questions come to mind when I think of slavery in America, why did it exist? What was slavery like? And lastly, what did it do to America? Through my personal readings I have come to understand these three questions and the vast answers that follow them.…

Yes, The U.S owes reparations to Black Americans and should pay, for all the wrong and injustice of slavery. For hundreds of years African American have endured lack of fairness physically and mentally. History states that African Americans were officially freed from slavery in 1865. Even though slavery may have ended in 1865, Blacks were still treated with no respect. African Americans should receive reparations due to the fact they were denied forty acres and a mule. Many other groups have been rewarded for the injustice that they have endured, so why can’t African American? We live in a world where Blacks feel as if they are the targets, especially by the police. The government has finally recognized their wrongs and it is time for African Americans to stand up for what’s right and claim what belongs to them. I personally believe that race plays a major role in our daily lives.…

Why then, shouldn’t African Americans be paid their dues as well? Another argument for the use of reparations is made by Ta-Nehisi Coates, a journalist for the Atlantic Magazine and a supporter of reparations, who argues, “that reparations are needed because, after the Civil War, African-Americans endured a second slavery. This was due to practices like debt peonage, a system where somebody is forced to work to pay off a debt. It was also due to Jim Crow laws, which enforced racial segregation in the southern states.” The poignant topic of the Jim Crow laws is often ignored when people who are against reparations say that, “... black former slaves are not alive anymore”.…

The debate over the proposal for reparations for African Americans has generated even more controversy than affirmative action policies. But since the African Americans that live in America today didn’t experience slavery. They also didn’t experience racial segregation. To the few who don’t know what reparations are? They are proposals for compensations that people like Robert L. Allen think should be provided to the descendants of enslaved people in the United States. This is in consideration of the unpaid labor their ancestors performed over centuries. The article says that Robert L. Allen favors reparations for African Americans. But The Economist is opposed to reparations. But in my personal opinion I would have to agree with The Economist. The reason I agree is because even though my ancestors may have been enslaved. It would take too much time and effort to find the descendants of former enslaved people, time that we don’t have now in the United States. Our economy is already at risk of another depression. So where would the money for reparation come from to pay the give to these people.…

At some point in history slavery has plagued every nation on the planet. Countless governments have allowed the complete control of African Americans for the benefit of other people, usually Caucasians, under the pretention of social, commercial, and technical movement. Even with time passed, African Americans are still resentful for long the long unconstitutional enslavement and mistreatment of their ancestors. There is no excuse for the many years of abuse that the black community received, nor can time heal the wounds left, and even though slavery has ended long ago, the black community is still mistreated with unequal opportunities, racist treatment, social barriers and economic inequalities. Is there a monetary value…

“Few groups in American history have suffered worse treatment than African Americans (Monroe p.152).” The only group of people that have arguably suffered worse treatment is the Native Americans and they receive reparations. American Slavery first began in 1619, when African slaves were moved to the North American colony by a Dutch ship to Jamestown, Virginia.
