In any field where your job is to provide a service to the public, it is important to have a basic understanding of the people you serve. The same is true for those who work in law enforcement, but because of the nature of their duties, it is an issue for serious concern. The multicultural shift in America means that there is more representation of various minority groups, all of whom have differing historic relations with those in law enforcement, and often times an unfavorable one. Whether these groups are newly represented in American society or have been part of the society for generations, most often there is a history of unfair or unequal treatment under the law that is difficult for parties on both sides of the issue to overcome. This lies at the core of the problems with police-community relations (PCR). In order to serve the public to the best of their abilities, those who 've taken the oath to do so need involvement from the community they represent, a community that seems to be ever…

Institutional Racism Institutional racism is the concept of race and the idea of a racial hierarchy playing a large role in the creation and maintaining of certain institutions. For instance, in the criminal justice system, a system dominated by white men, the power lies in those who wish to keep it. Thus these men are more likely to incarcerate and profit off of those they are afraid of, in this case other races, and try to dominate over them, entrenching the system in racist ideas. Institutional Racism is what leads to the large number of ethnic and racially diverse prisoners, as well as the incredibly fast growing number of female african americans being put to jail.…

We all know that there's a lot of racial profiling that happens in the police department but there's even one criminal profiling. In my opinion I think they come hand-in-hand because when you look at somebody only are you touching them by their appearance you're also taking them by the way they carry themselves. For example, if you grow up in a particular neighborhood where everyone's always yelling and fighting then people are going to think you were like that as well. All because you grew up in that neighborhood they write you off as being someone that's hostile. In reality just because you grab an area doesn't mean you're going to turn out like everyone else. There are many cases of people being written off as a no because their background.…

Racial prejudice by police is becoming alarmingly out of control as state by state African Americans men are gunned down in city streets throughout the USA. During the past year, there have been major controversies and civil unrest surrounding the number of minorities murdered by law enforcement without cause or reason. Keith Childress was killed in Las Vegas on December 31, 2015. Police explanation for the shooting was the victim had something in his hand and they thought it was a gun. The assumed gun that was in his hand was his cell phone. Again, on December 23, 2015 Kevin Matthews was brutally murdered by police in Michigan. Racial profiling within law enforcement has been around for such a long time, leading many to wonder why it has persisted. Part of the reason is that there has been a lack of action by Congress surrounding this issue. Early in 2001, the End Racial Profiling Act was introduced to Congress, which stated “no law enforcement agent or law enforcement agency shall engage in racial profiling.” (The Leadership Conference, 2011) It failed after the September 11th terrorist attacks in the United States, due to a fear that ending racial profiling would hurt counterterrorism efforts. The bill was later reintroduced in 2010, but also died as Congress adjourned late in the year. Legislative shortcomings like this are doing minority communities no favors.…

A quote I viewed as racial is “ Yeah, i totally agree with that. I don't think, you know, they're all like that, but, i mean,it's just that if it wasn't that way, why would there be so many poor blacks living in the projects? If they worked hard, they could make it just as high as anyone else could. You know, i just think that's, you know, they're raised that way and they see what their parents are like so they assume that's the way it should be…” stated Kim a student at SU. (Bonilla-Silva, 2014, p.88) This statement made me feel as if some individuals have alternative motives towards people of color. Reading this quote I Felt as if i was to ask the same question as the interviewer i would receive many responses as to this one.…
