Part III
Answer the following in 150 to 250 words each:
• How do racial groups interact in contemporary America? Are interactions positive, negative, or neutral? Support your response using proper citations.
Racial groups interact much better in contemporary America then they did in colonial America. I would say that the interactions are neutral but there are still some negative cases. Unfortunately you can’t force every person in America to get along with every other person. Whether people have disagreements based on simple thoughts about something or due to race it is something that will happen. Although in most cases racial interactions in America are positive or neutral there are still times where the interactions can turn negative due to personal feelings. It is sad that there are still negative interactions coming from racial groups in America today. We have moved forward from the situations in history but I am afraid that negative racial feelings may never completely disappear.
• Are there existing social inequities based on race? Why or why not?
There are defiantly existing social inequities based on race. There is currently police racial profiling, unemployment, and incarceration that can all be based on race. Although there has been a positive change in all racial aspects since colonial America there are still many people or companies that show signs of current social inequities. It may not be shown often or easily noticed but it is happening. Many times you hear stories of companies turning down applicants due to their foreign sounding names without ever meeting them. This happens with more factors than just race. Age, gender, and sexual orientation can all be factors that lead to inequities. It is a big misfortune that there are still social inequities based on race or any factor, we have moved forward in hopes that people could have the chance to be treated equally.
• What do you believe to be the causes of racial prejudice and discrimination in today’s society?
Most people in today’s society have had a chance to become educated on different races so I can’t blame racial prejudice and discrimination on lack of education. The most popular reason for prejudice and discrimination would be when the feelings are passed down or practiced throughout a family. When a person is raised with a family who has certain strong feelings toward a race they are likely to carry those feelings with them throughout their adult life. Another cause of racial prejudice and discrimination would be a personal experience. If a person were to be in a negative situation with a certain race they may be likely to gain negative racial feelings.
