Rain Man Monologue
There are a million things Duo loves about the snow. The way it gets stuck in your hair or tickles your nose. You can pack it up and have a snowball fight. You can lay in it and make a snow angel. The flurry wistfulness when the wind throws the snow around, right before a snowstorm. A freshly fallen bed of snow, and the first footsteps you trudge through it. But most of all, that darling feeling when you wake up in the middle of the night and look out the window. The dark night cast away by bright flickering street lights, and pale white snow. The streets are piled with it, not yet plowed in the morning. The cars are covered in it, so untouched by the usual commotion of man. It looks so peaceful, yet at the same time so cold. And you get that warm feeling in your chest, knowing you’re safe …show more content…
I always promised Levi I wouldn’t kill myself… so… I want you to do it,” they say. Jack looks up at Duo, wide eyed.

“Why?” He asks. Duo lets out a breath and looks up at the treetops.

“I won’t have anything else to fight for… or I guess… I won’t have any motivation,” they let out a short chuckle. “Everyone I love… will be dead. You’ll hate me. I want you to be the one to finish me off. My pride won’t let me turn myself in to Icarus.”

Jack squints at Duo, hoping that they’re joking.

“I’m done, Jack. I’ve taken my stab at this world and all I’ve managed to do is cause the suffering of others. More pain, more death. It would be the ultimate universal favor if I killed myself. But…” They kneel down to him. “You’re the only one left I would put my heart into, and even you hate me. I want you to channel that rage and… kill me. I won’t fight back. I’m done.”

The words they say are so incredibly grim, but they smile. It may be the first genuine smile Jack has seen on Duo’s face in a long time.

Jack shakes his head, confused and terrified. “Why me?” He asks. “Why would you ask me to do that?”

Duo shrugs. “You’re the only one I know will do

"I could kill you like this," Peter whispered. "Just press and press until you're dead. And I could say that I didn't know it would hurt you, that we were just playing, and they'd believe me, and everything would be fine. And you'd be dead. Everything would be fine."…

“Well, that doesn’t change anything, I can’t get that time back now!” I said, realizing I might as well cut out all logic in my words, such a bizarre scenario wouldn't need a thing like reasoning. “Who said anything about that?” Death said, tilting his head and smiling somewhat maniacally. He continued, circling around me as he began.…

It’s being outside past midnight on a winter night. It’s a secret - it’s something we’re not supposed to see. The sky is purple but it’s also white. And why is it so bright out? The streetlamps mix the colors into a dynamic palate, with a hint of bronze. And the snowflakes the snowflakes the snowflakes. They’re frozen. Yes they are literally frozen water but that’s not what I mean. It’s chaos but if you look closer it’s not chaos. Look up. Look closer - they’re suspended in thin air, but every time you exhale they start falling again. It’s hushed. It’s a secret. You’re not supposed to look. You’re supposed to wake up the next morning and look outside while you’re making coffee and think, “Huh. Maybe they’ll cancel classes today”.…

The ground below me was warm even though the air was cold. Sounds of people's feet pattering around surrounded me but the fog was to thick to make out any human bodies. The patterning turned into mumbling and then mumbling to silence. My skin began to tighten from the frigid air. I wrapped my limbs around my body to retain warmth and realized I was nude.…

You feel the cool air warm up around yourself. There is a pleasantness that can only be found in these warm winter days. Birds squawk overhead. In a pack they fly in v’s. You wanted to fly, but the dream fled after you jumped off the deck. Birds gain height, you gained a broken arm. The birds slow and descend onto the small patch of grass to your left. Wildlife is all around you, but the adults don’t seem to notice. Not far ahead, a squirrel shoves acorns into his mouth, climbing up a tree he deposits his cache into a hole. He runs down the tree to start the process again. Nature is a cycle, a loop that won’t…

It was an oddly quiet Sunday morning in the middle of December. Clear skies, forests and beautiful snow-capped mountains dominated the views from my front porch. The temperature was mild, one of those days you could wear a thin sweater and be a little chilly. There were no birds chirping or butterflies fluttering, as they had all left to the south to find a more suitable environment for them or died. I had missed this type of day when you could relax in the peacefulness of the quiet morning…

If I sit on the front porch, in my old oak rocking chair, I can see the trees waving in the early morning breeze. I love this when there is a slight frost and the air is crisp. Yes, it’s a bit chilly, but I pull my fuzzy red bathrobe tighter around me and enjoy the coolness. I watch as the last few hummingbirds hit the feeder, searching for their early morning meal. Soon all the leaves will be gone, leaving only the bare branches for me to watch. In a few minutes the sun will be peeking through the trees and the crystal ice will melt away. I sit here, drinking in the sights, sounds, and smells of early morning in the wooded hills where I live. It is a peaceful feeling knowing that I need not hurry for anything this morning. I reflect on the fact that I am a lucky woman.…
