The Most Dangerous Game

He had never slept in a better bed. Rainford decided.

In two seconds, the general had run up to the wall where they enormous swords hang. General drew one of them and threw one of them to Rainford. Rainford was not prepared for its weight, which meant that he fell down. The General made a move toward him. Rainsford found himself quickly, he spun around on the floor and took shelter behind the armchair at the fireplace. A fight broke out. A fight for life or death.

Suddenly the door to the bedroom flew opened. There stood Ivan with his torn shirt and blood running out from a wound in his abdomen.
Both the General and Rainsford dropped their jaws when they saw that Ivan was alive. How could it be possible. While

Rainsford pointed his big rifle on to Ivan and started to walk towards him. When he came closer to the fire end the light he saw what Ivan had written in the sand.
After a few minutes of thinking he lowered the gun and started to write an answer next to Ivan’s text. They sat down for several hours to come up with a plan how to punish General Zaroff.

Rainsford and Ivan decided to go back to the castle. Because the General were so polite and friendly they decided to do the same for him. They brought new clothes and cooked a meal that they could bring to him. When they went down to the cellar and stopped in front of the Generals cell said Rainsford gladly “Here you go! Something fresh to wear and something warm to eat.

Take your time, because after this meal we will hunt - you and I.”
“You will find this game worth playing, Rainford said enthusiastically. Your brain against mine. Your woodcraft against mine. Your strength and stamina against mine. Outdoor chess!” Learn by your own mistakes

Ivan and Rainsford opens the door to the courtyard and threw out the General in the darkness.
It took only a few seconds before the hell broke loose.

The next clue is revealed when Zaroff reveals his love for hunting. His passion for hunting shows us that he can use a weapon and not only that but he is very skilled with one too. The mention of there being big game on the island also builds on this suspense, as he has to import the game onto island. The suspense is then built on when the General mentions that hunting has become too easy, it no longer fascinated him, and no animal had a chance with him anymore. If no animal had a chance with him anymore then what is possibly hunting on the island? The answer to that is later on revealed that he had invented a new animal. This adds on the suspense leaving the readers questioning what animal could he have possibly invented and how could he invent a new animal. The final clue is revealed when General Zaroff mentions that the perfect prey should be able to reason, but no animal can reason. Except for one,…

Blood splattered to the ground, flung from the end of a longsword blade thrust in and out of the red man’s heart. Stumbling back, he fell to the earth beneath him, writhing in discomfort and pain. Such a descent left behind a resounding thud, though muffled by the pings and clashes of shield and sword and the screams of pain, agony, and terror. More red men arrived in droves, marching onward, firing a barrage of scorching arrows at the town, striking thatch roofs, the fields, and the trees. The quick strikes of boots on the ground echoed like drums through the still air. The sun shone on the blades of the red men’s axes and swords, blindingly bright, as it slipped below the horizon. Night was nearing.…

The entire sweep of the battle appears to the insomniac artilleryman. He hears the cries of the infantry units as they charge into battle and sees a colonel brandishing his sword at the head of the column. He observes the “gaps cut by the enemy’s volleys” as men fall wounded and dead on the field. He breathes “the suffocating smoke” that descends upon the battlefield, obscuring the action. After a momentary lull, the activity on the battlefield resumes with greater intensity, a “chaos louder than ever.” Infantry units shift positions, and cavalry and artillery batteries move “hither and thither.” The artilleryman again experiences the “Grime, heat, rush” of battle…

This human, General Zaroff, was playing a torturous game with Rainsford like a game of cat and mouse. Just when the General Zaroff had found Rainsford’s hiding spot, he turned and walked away. This absolutely horrified Rainsford. “The general could follow a trail through woods at night; he could follow and extremely difficult trail… Rainsford’s second thought was even more terrible… The general was playing with him!” (Connell 108). Despite his terrible fear, Rainsford was able to choke down his fear and carry on. “I must keep my nerve. I must keep my nerve.” (Connell 106). Because he was able to persist on being fearless, Rainsford later on defeated Zaroff and won the game. Once again, even when confronted with a life-threatening danger, Rainsford was able to be brave, maintain a level head, and figure out the intelligent thing to do. This is what led him to victorious survival.…
