ramayana redux
The Nigerian Realm was one that was residing in peace. However the realm had a fault. Two kingdoms divided it. The north was the kingdom where the Muslims resided. The south was the Christian dwelling. These two kingdoms disagreed on certain political points and sometimes had arguments about how the country should be run. However in the end the two kingdoms came together and existed as a whole. Vali was the leader of Boko haram, a small Muslim group in opposition of the Christians. He raised his flyer in his right hand and shouted to the passerby,
“They are against us, we need to stop them soon.”
The people of the northern kingdom had no time for this. Most ignored him. Some stopped to take a flyer but threw it away in the trash bin a few feet further. By the end of the day he was hot, tired and had not accomplished anything. He was out of fliers and he didn’t have enough money to print more. The day could not get any worse. “At least I will speak in the town square tomorrow,” he thought to himself.
He hoped that it would accomplish more than he had today.
Tomorrow came and he dressed his best. He stood up confidently on a soapbox and began. As he finished his speech the few people in the audience who had been watching him, dispersed and went back to what they were doing. Vali felt defeated and sat down. No one had taken what he was saying seriously. He started to feel sick in his stomach.
Shiva straightened his tie and brushed the dust from his pants. His suit was freshly ironed and his shoes were shined perfectly. He walked with a certain air that let people know he wasn’t from this country. He approached Vali and sat down next to him. He spoke slowly,
“That was a nice speech. It really moved me.”
Vali looked to his right and saw the man.
“I don’t want to buy what you are selling, please leave me alone.”
Shiva saw that Vali was obviously upset and confused. He stood him up and straightened his collar.
“ Pardon me, I did not introduce myself

In the beginning of his speech, King immediately develops his ethos by personally thanking the audience for being present during a storm warning and letting them know that they, like him, are simply determined to “go on anyhow.” He humbly accepts the microphone after hearing from his close friend, explaining that he is not quite sure who that wonderful introduction was supposed to be for. With these words, he has obtained even more credibility than he had previously by appealing to the audience on a personal level. He has opened up the floor to emotionally connect with his listeners.…

The sky had darkened, causing the lamp post to flickered on seconds later, as the outside world went to sleep. He sat down on the old gray office chair in the living room, waiting impatiently for the interview to start. He wore one of his favorite shirts, the white one with holes in it, and blue plaid pajama pants. His black eyes wandered across the room, as he scratched his beard looking as if he regretted agreeing to this interview. Holding a piece of yellow paper, for a guide to answering my questions, the interview began.…

I am not sure why my voice trembles when I speak in front of a crowd of teenagers who were just as delicate and anxious as I present myself to be at that moment- perhaps they won’t notice I am shivering, I thought to myself. After I mumble the facts off my paper, the presentation came to an end, but I’ve failed to speak of my point of view that I prepared to share for hours the night before. Again, I found myself regretting every word that continues to linger in the thoughts that only spoke to me.…

For some time he sat gazing stupidly at the paper. The telescreen had changed over to strident military music. It was curious that he seemed not merely to have lost the power of expressing himself, but even to have forgotten what it was that he had originally intended to say. For weeks past he had been making ready for this moment, and it had never crossed his mind that anything would be needed except courage. The actual writing would be easy. All he had to do was to transfer to paper the interminable restless monologue that had been running inside his head, literally for years. At this moment, however, even the monologue had dried up. Moreover his varicose ulcer had begun itching unbearably. He dared not scratch it, because if he did so it…

Indeed, there is an earlier example of Old Javanese literature showing a reference to the shadow play; the opus magnum of kakawin literature, the Old Javanese Ramayana, supposed to be composed in the middle of the 9th century, mentions in canto 24.112 a widu mawayang, i.e. a performer who is playing wayang. Following recent findings by A. Acri, this canto stands in a complex religious context on a Saiva background. A widu is "a figure standing between a performer and an ascetic" (Acri, 2011:55).…
