I snap back to reality and notice that my speedometer read 30 mph. I was in a 20 mph zone. I slam on the brakes to slow down. Behind me, a driver lays on his horn to tell me how irresponsible my last decision was. I reach for the radio and turn the tuner dial until I find something upbeat and groovy. As I remove my hand, I begin to hit on the steering wheel like a drum. The steering wheel is black and coverless. It sounds good when I hit it. It is also keeping me awake at the moment. My step mom sat next to me in the passenger’s seat messing around with her phone. She never pays attention to me when I’m driving. I see a curb on the next right turn I have to take. After running over the curb, my step mom glances up to make sure I did not hit anyone. When realizing that everything is fine, she goes back to Facebook on her phone. The darkness of night was exhausting. My eyes fluttered in the beams of the yellow street lights. In a couple of blocks, I make another right turn. Then a left turn into my driveway. I turn off the engine and let out a sigh of relief. I reach for my door handle and pull, eager to go to my bed. My legs wobble underneath me as I stumble out of the truck. I am finally…
In today’s society, most people communicate using of cell phones. Just 15 to 20 years ago, cell phones were a rarity for the average person. The average income person could not afford a cell phone. Today, cell phones are affordable and the majority of people own them. The days of waiting until you are home to use a telephone or searching for a pay phone if you are out are long gone. In fact, pay phones are being removed, which increases the need for a cell phone. The government will provide a cell phone with limited monthly service for those that are low income and meet certain criteria. The cell phone has also created people to feel the need to be accessible to constant communication. The major problem lies with cell phone use while driving, which presents a constant danger on the road. In many instances, it is a deadly danger.…
What if everything you knew and were used to, such as friends, family and way of life, suddenly changed? This happened to me when my family moved to Puerto Rico for the first time. All the things I was used to in my hometown of Boston, Massachusetts, all the people I knew suddenly changed overnight. At first I didn’t think it was going to be that different. But I soon found out that there were so many differences, big and small.…
Everyone in the world has a journey to find their passion. Whether it be short, long, thought-out or impulsive, people may find out what career field they'd like to join. Once one discovers their passion and what career path to follow, they are then made to pursue a degree that will help them excel. For some it took only moments to decide their fate; it takes some only a simple decision towards what path they want to take. It took me years of researching, exploring and see-sawing between numerous careers and different degrees to pursue. There were a few things I knew from the beginning along with a few things I picked up along the way that I wanted to do. I've always known I've wanted a degree from the beginning, but I started wanting a degree thinking it'd make me more money than average; I've learned since then it's almost the only way to get a decent job in this day and age. Now that I'm older, I finally decided my future as far as the degree I want and what I'd like to do with it. I've also decided how and where I'm going to obtain my degree. There are so many ways to go to college and get a degree; I could have gone to an online school, a 4 year university, a community college or even a mixture of all. With all the different choices in the world, it's a hard decision to make.…
There can be major physical changes and effects to a female’s body after having a child. In 2011 when I had my son the hospital gave me an epidural for the pain; they did the shot too high up on my back. As far as anyone knew I was fine. I showed no signs of problems until after I got out of the hospital, when I started having back spasms due to the fact that the epidural was done incorrectly. The female body goes through many natural changes; it prepares itself to be capable of having a child naturally and being capable of breastfeeding babies. It can also cause other effects that are not necessarily normal changes to the female body, for me the two main changes that I had were being anemic and having a hyperthyroid. The doctors told me that I was anemic because I had lost too much blood during labor and that the hyperthyroid was a result of my body changing after having my son but that it was nothing to worry about.…
They say curiosity killed the cat, expressing that it’s dangerous and extremely risky being curious because it can get you put in difficult situations. But for me, curiosity has gotten me to places in my life that I never thought imaginable. Curiosity gives me the courage to take a risk and more times than not, ends up helping me. It’s that, “I wonder what would happen if…” that inspires us to make decisions every single day whether we know it or not. Sometimes the smallest event changes the way you think about life for the rest of your life, just like it did to me.…
On August 15, 2007, my older brother, Lucas, suggested we go to the corncrib. I agreed and we walked across the farm to flip the lock and open the large white doors. I followed him inside, and hence there being no windows on the lower level, it took my eyes awhile to adjust to the darkness. I heard Luke’s voice somewhere to my left, and glanced over my shoulder to vaguely see him climbing up a ladder. Having never been inside the corncrib before, I blindly followed him. My eyes stung as they adjusted to the bright sunlight and the dusty air in the top level. After about fifteen minutes, Luke told me that he was going to go back inside the house. He began climbing down the ladder, so I shadowed him.…
At least I thought, I was going to survive until one Saturday afternoon when I was wheeling my chair across an alley. Speeding through the alley way came a huge pickup truck, I started screaming! I couldn’t get out of the way fast enough. Other people began shouting, waving their hands, to catch the driver’s attention. The driver slams on his brakes, stopping within inches of me.…
My life changing decision wasn’t exactly a decision I made for myself. In 2011 I walked into Wal-Mart with a friend and left with a police officer behind me leading me to his car in cuffs. That day was the first day of the rest of my life. I was on my way to the Illinois Department of Corrections, better known as prison. Sometimes when people end up in prison they decide it is time to change their life.…
Life is going to have a million turning points. I’ve realized what you make of those turning points proves who you are. When things get tough you really can’t give up, keep going. Moving on is not simple, but when you realize what has past is in the past, you’ve learned a great lesson.…
When you write a narrative essay, you are telling a story. Narrative essays are told from a defined point of view, often the author's, so there is feeling as well as specific and often sensory details provided to get the reader involved in the elements and sequence of the story. The verbs are vivid and precise. The narrative essay makes a point and that point is often defined in the opening sentence, but can also be found as the last sentence in the opening paragraph.…
I’ve never felt so close to death since that night. It was the longest seconds of my driving experience. This short story occurred in my homeland, Kozu island near Tokyo, Japan, where I have spent most of the time of my life. This is a very beautiful and splendid island. What I like about the island is that there are many narrow and winding roads that crazy drivers would love to drive on; I was the one of the crazy drivers on the island. I was driving a car in the middle of the night, and my friend’s car was following me behind my car. It was just before our favorite place of my island.…
One night, I planned to visit my friend who lived on Venice beach. His place was about 15 minutes drive from my apartment. It was around 9 P.M. and there weren’t so many cars on the street. Since there was only me and the other car I front of me. I decided to drive faster without knowing what was going to happen. Suddenly, the car turned around at the front of my car. I didn’t know what was on the driver’s mind. It was happening so fast that I almost stop breathing at the moment. I hit the car very hard until the security air bag exploded to safe me from hitting the steering wheel. When I had recalled my consciousness, I thought to myself “I had to get out of here before it explodes!” Then, I…
I stared up in shock at the announcer. I was sitting in the middle of an audience I had just played for a few hours ago.…
We often imagine about how see our lives go by in seconds when we placed in life or death situations. This was no exception, I recalled the most important moments in my life as I spun on that ATV bike. Everything came to my mind, my most treasured memories that reminded me how I had lived my life to the fullest. As other people spent their spring break at the beach or watching movies, I was being medically treated, due to my severe scrapes. What was supposed to be a perfect vacation turned out to be the most painful thing that I have ever experienced.…
