For the last century, educational philosophers and activists have been campaigning about a method to categorize and state what should be taught in schools. Although the terms standards and objectives have specific meanings in some contexts, they are often used interchangeably.
Ravitch (2010) has a sense of urgency and submits a call to action regarding standards. She believes that high-stakes testing and choice have ruined the American educational system, and that some educational reforms can be misleading. Like many others, Ravitch (2010) was initially in favor of No Child Left Behind although she quickly became disillusioned as she came to realize that it did not raise expectations nor require curriculum.     This film appeared to stir up controversy in the state that Guggenheim promotes charter schools and blames the teachers for the educational failures. In the film, Guggenheim puts a huge role on charter schools and how they could be the solution to all the issues in the public school systems.     Greene’s article claims that there’s evidence proving testing actually made low performing schools implement more on teaching (Greene 481). Each author has a distinctive view on certain positions. From my perspective, Ravitch’s statement makes the most sense. Before we had STAAR teacher’s didn’t worry as much about the exam or students scores. Now, when you walk into a classroom one of the main things a teacher will say to their students that they will make sure to teach what will be on the test and skip the stuff that won’t be on it, and after all the test taking the class will be more of a review. The main problem in public schools is not social income, it’s mainly based on the administrative, the ones who run the school. Another issue in low performance in schools would be school choice.     The No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act focuses on standardized testing in all American schools. It is the Bush administration's sweeping educational reform, aimed at improving the performance of the nation's public schools by introducing accountability. Supporters of the act claim that it will increase the performance of all school children by raising the standards and allowing parents greater freedom in choosing the school they want their child to attend. The act also puts in place a system of punishment for schools if their student body does not perform to the standards set down by the National government (NCLB act). As well as increasing standards, this act also encourages teachers to use a curriculum that the government developed with "scientifically based research" (a phrase that appears 111 times in the act) (Hammond 4). While standardized curriculum and increased standards seem like they would improve children's learning, in reality it hurts them by pushing them too hard academically instead of focusing on social development, and denying them specialized attention based upon their individual abilities. The debate surrounding this has become a significant topic since the Act is currently under review and could be in the process of reauthorization. At the time of its inception, both political parties (Republicans and Democrats) supported the NCLB Act, however, both parties are now arguing over its validity. In 2005, there have been slight \adjustments to the regulations first set in 2005 by the Department of Education, but the revisions were not enough to gain full support from both parties. This act has failed to garner support from most Americans, and like most Americans, I also agree that this should not be reinstituted. No Child Left Behind was designed by the Bush administration to reduce the "learning gap" between different groups of students and to ensure better teacher equality.
