Reaction Paper #1
Religion and culture are both similar and different in certain ways. People around the world have their own cultures that include religion, but also many people choose to believe or not believe in specific things. While culture might be tradition, religion might be choice.
Culture and religion are similar and connected in various ways. Many different beliefs and views concerning social affairs, politics, and morality are affected due to cultures and faith. I would like to use same-sex marriage as an example. Today there are some states in the U.S that are working towards allowing same-sex marriages to take place, while there are others that are opposed to it. A big reason for that are the faiths and believes of the majority of the people in that certain area. States that have more liberal views are open to such marriage, while places (like Oklahoma) have struggled with allowing that to happen because of our location in the “bible-belt” Oklahoma is a very conservative where people stand strong in their beliefs and faith resulting in the acceptance of gays and same-sex marriage to be harder than other states.
Although culture and religion are similar and connect in various ways, they also differentiate from each other. I read on www.cultureandreligion.com that culture seems to be a broad term that is defined by art, languages, traditions, clothing, and many other characteristics of a certain group of people in a particular area no matter how big or small. Religion can be included in the whole concept of culture, but it is way more personal. Religion is what someone chooses to commune with. It is a practice rather than a tradition that people use to live a morally sound lifestyle. In many cultures there are specific religions that people choose to follow, but in the end it depends on that specific person and what they choose to believe.
Religion and culture have and will always be connected
