Ashley Harris http://www.deaf-culture-online.com/intimatemoments.html I chose this article because I really wanted to learn how people in the deaf culture can be intimate with each other. I have not had any previous knowledge on this topic. I had a friend who wanted to date me and I turned him down because I was too focused on my education. Now, I find myself wondering what that experience would have been like and how far our relationship would have grown not only as friends but as lovers as well. While reading “Intimate Moments” I found that even though most average guys don’t like to talk about their feelings they would rather play the video games. I totally agree with that statement. I also found that people in the deaf community feel closer to others because they communicate. The author said that in a discussion group he had a comment was made that “Speech is most important because you need it to communicate with 99.9 percent of the population.” I want to know who the other .1 percent of the population is. Why is sign language not thought of as meaningful communication among the hearing community? I wonder how people in the deaf community feel when going to family functions where the rest of their family is hearing. I want to know how a person in the deaf community feels when they are in a room full of friends who are hearing and they have to play “catch up”. Do people in the deaf community have better personal relationships with each other because they can communicate better?
After reading this article I have learned a lot about deaf culture. I never looked at them any different because they are people just like I am. I did not realize because of the depth of their conversations that they hold with each other. I now have a much greater respect for the deaf community that what I had before. My respect has grown because I now realize that
