Reading and Writing
My Experience with Reading and Writing I started reading when I was young. I learned that reading and writing comes in stages. I wanted to read everything that was around me. But sometimes it was hard to comprehend on what I was reading about. I learned to slow down when I read things. Once I slowed down I started remembering what I read about. With the teachers help I slowly got better. I have slowly learned to do different tasks with reading and writing. I think that anyone can grow their skills in reading and writing with practice and time.I would at least two Books a week.I would do The book- athon in elementary school. That really helped my Reading Skills a lot. My experience in writing requires a lot of skills. It was mentally draining at times. I could tell you what I read about verbally but when it came time to write it down my mind went blank. If I was told to write about a book or short story that I read I would often have to re-read the text to comprehend what I should write about. The older I got and the more I went to school essays soon became easier for me. I was really never excellent at writing but I am way better than what I once was. I’m still working every day to overcome this challenge. Learning to write and learning to read is a long process. I had to progress and work on my skills very slowly. I had to take it from one stage to another. Each stage gave me the opportunity to build on my skills. I had learned earlier on reading and writing requires a lot of skills. Apart of depending on each other they rely on development in other areas. I developed better motor skills and better

Do we all learn to read and write the same exact way? The answer is simply no, learning how to read and write happens differently for every person, some rely on parents or grandparents while others rely on themselves or teachers. After reading Sherman Alexie’s: The Joy of Reading and Writing: Superman and Me I saw how just how different people have it growing up in the education system. After reading his story I began to notice just how differently I had it growing up. Alexie, for the most part was self-taught, I myself had to rely on parents and grandparents. Learning something like reading and writing has a lot to do with the situation or environment a person grows up in, if they are expected to succeed they will be pushed to learn the concept. This is where Alexie and I start to travel in different paths.…

For me, learning to read and write was long and felt like a drag to me; I took reading and writing for granted and never thought of the great advantages that every book had. It all started at home when I was five years old and my mom was teaching me how to write my name. In my head, I had trouble understanding on what I wrote but as far as I know that was my name. Finally the day came and it was time for me to go to school. I was scared; I did not know where I was, and I did not know a single word in English. There was no way my mom would stick me in an English classroom. They moved me to a Spanish one; there I had a more clear idea of what I was learning. The teacher was a sweet, calm lady; she had patience with bad writing, to this day I have not figured out whether she understood it or not. Once I learned my ABC’s here came the small words of animals and things like for example “oso” which means bear in Spanish. Learning to read and write seamed so boring. I had to sit down and do homework which required my attention, but I preferred to draw and play. Learning was torture; I would read very slowly, even when I tried to read those small picture books for small kids, I was useless by that time.…

I don't remember specifics on how I learned to read, but I do remember learning how to read at an early age. My mother was an elementary school teacher and spent a lot of time working with me on my letters and sounds. I remember doing a lot of flashcards with my mom on the different letters and phonemes. I also remember my mom reading to me a lot, especially at night. I would sit in her lap and follow along as she read. As I became a better reader my mom would stop at different words and let me read. I always enjoyed reading with my mom and was excited when I could actually read the words with her.…

The quote “ If there is no struggle, there is no progress.” by Frederick Douglass clearly sums up my experience as a writer. Writing has always been a challenge for me primarily due to a lack of practice and confidence. Whenever I am assigned a writing task, academic or creative, such a journal entry, reflection paper, essay, or research paper, my immediate reaction is instinctively negative and fearful. In addition, I never took the subject seriously in my years of studies because I never deemed writing to be crucial and necessary unless I wanted to become a professional writer.…

I am not a professional reader, nor am I a professional writer. As a matter of fact, I don’t like writing at all, but then writing is a part of life. She would read to me all the time and encourage me to read anything I could get my hands on. I would always see her with a book during her spare time.…

Like most kids might say, I don’t remember not being able to read. For as long as I can remember, I was always reading. I very often saw my parents reading to my younger sister or just to themselves. My love for reading has changed a lot over the years, but I believe that’s why I learned so early. I wanted to be just like my parents or other adults that read on their own whenever they have time. I thought I would enjoy it, and I was right.…
