V for Vendetta is a film adapted from the graphic novel series of the same name. It follows a vigilante named ‘V’ who uses terrorist tactics to fight the fascist government who rules the world in which he lives in. V discovers he is not alone in his quest when, early in the film he saves a young women named ‘Evey’ whom he realises to be a vital part of his mission.
During the opening scene with Evey, she is listening to man speak on television about the ‘American War’ and how they slaughtered millions of Muslims, terrorists and homosexuals. The man refers to them as ‘degenerate filth’. This sequence made me feel intrigued as to what sort of world Evey is living in, whether this was past or presents or an alternate universe of sorts. Before Evey abruptly turns the television off, the man on screen’s last line is ‘England will prevail’. With this line I could deduce that the media of England in this world is certainly not unbiased and favours England in a cult-like way. I believe that students in Year 12 would find this especially interesting as we are at the age where we are beginning to understand politics and build our own opinions on the matter, but we are still relatively young and have that ‘anti-establishment’ bravado of which is seen vividly throughout the text.
Once Evey is saved by V after a very exquisitely designed action scene in which V demonstrates his use of knives, Evey asks ‘Are you like a… Crazy person?’ to which V replies, “That’s
