In 1945 the United States made history by dropping the first atomic bomb on
Japan. This was due to an attack on Pearl Harbor and other territories in the Pacific
Ocean led by Japan during WW2. The United States had no choice but to retaliate, and consequently released an atomic bomb over the city of Hiroshima, killing 140,000 civilians. It was justified and necessary for the United States to drop the atomic bomb on
Japan because they wanted to end World War II, impress Russia, and keep the Soviet
Union from expanding in Europe.
The atomic bomb was needed to end World War II. War against Japan in the pacific continued to rage. Up until that point, Japan rejected the request of unconditional surrender and had a strong army of two million in home islands. The last rational option that the United States …show more content…
had to force Japan to surrender was by dropping the atomic bomb. Without doing so, Japan would not have stepped down.
In addition to forcing a surrender, the U.S.
was also trying to impress Russia. If
Russians invaded Japan, they would have gained too much power. The United States used the atomic bomb to intimidate them, and to prove they had superior weaponry. The
United States seeked to establish superiority and to take credit for ending the war.
Introducing the atomic bomb aided the effort to contain the soviet union and communism. The soviet union had joined in war against Japan. The U.S. wanted to end the war in the pacific before the soviet forces moved into east Asia. They wanted to end soviet expansion in Europe, and prevent them from becoming a world superpower.
In conclusion, it was necessary to drop the atomic bomb. The U.S. made it a priority to have “the biggest stick on the playground.” The atomic bomb was not only necessary to end the war, but to allow the United States to maintain superiority over other nations. Dropping the atomic bomb was important because it prevented the rivals of the United States from expanding and surpassing U.S. power. This is still relevant today because nations will do whatever it takes to maintain
power.
