Testing limits Toddlers are learning how to be independent and feel that they can do everything by themselves. They want to see what they can get away with. How far can they push the limits of the rules that are set before them? Toddlers are learning that they are having different thoughts and emotions from others around them. When they start to realize that they can have some control over their world, they want to test how much control they actually have and want to make their own choices.

Is it worth fighting about the toddler not wanting to put their socks on or that they want to wear their pajamas to the store? The adult must think about what it wants the final outcome to be. An example would be if the toddler wanted to sleep on the floor and not their bed at bedtime. The adult needs to thinks if it cares where the child sleeps as long as it takes a nap and is safely doing so. If the adult does not care, then that is a battle not worth having. However, if the child wanted to sleep on a high bookshelf, knowing that is not safe, then that would be a battle to have with the
