Reflective practice is something we all carry out every single day, probably without even realising it. We use reflection in many different situations and under many different circumstances, as a way of improving our own skills and abilities for different things, as individuals. Cowan proposed that learners are reflecting in an educational way, “When they analyse or evaluate one or more personal experiences, and attempt to generalise from that thinking” (1999: 18). Reflective practice allows us to look at something we have carried out and allows us to see whether or not we handled the situation properly or whether we would handle it differently if we were giving the opportunity to do it again. By doing this reflecting enables you to see how you have improved in certain areas and pinpoint areas which may need some improvement. It’s basically a way of seeing what you have learnt and perhaps shedding light on what could be done in the future. Over the past couple of weeks I have been reflecting on a clinical skill where I was the nurse who had to assit a patient who was unable to feed herself. By reflecting on my experiences I became aware of my feelings, communication, and observations which was not in the forefront of my awareness during my recording. The clinical skill this reflective assignment will refer too is that of the measurement of blood pressure. As the experience predominantly involved feelings and thoughts, I found it appropriate to use the Atkins and Murphy (1994) reflective model. The use of this model enables me to reflect on the experiences described below. It also guides my thoughts as to critically analysing the experience and enlightens me as to what has been learned from the experience. A reflective model such as this has been used because, as suggested by Hargreaves (1997), reflective models are a tool that is believed to result in both improvement in patient care and professional development. An appropriate definition I found was by Greenwood (1993), who suggested that, to think about what one is doing whilst one is doing it; it is typically stimulated by surprise, by something which puzzled the practitioner concerned. I found this an appropriate definition as I was taken completely by surprise at the commencement of my experience. For my finial reflection I have decided to reflect on the reflective practice itself and my abilities to practice reflection, as it appears I am having some issues with the process. After receiving an A- on my last reflection, I spoke with my Faculty Advisor (FA) with the intention of discovering why I was not achieving marks in the A+ range on my reflections, and what I need to work on to improve on the quality of my reflections. Her feedback was that I was too broad in my approach; I spend too much time discussing the event and did not go into enough depth in my reflective analysis. The community I grew up in deep in the heart of Austin, Texas celebrated my heritage, honored differences in culture, and fostered personal growth and self-discovery. My parents, with the strong work ethic they developed on their family’s farms in Ghana, encouraged my brother and me to work hard and find ways to use my skills to be of service to others. The APTA’s vision of “transforming society by optimizing movement to improve the human experience” is a profound statement. This statement is a testament to my life because I have lived it. I am not the individual blessed with Greek like genetics who can eat whatever they’d like without repercussion. Rather, I was once an obese teenager on the verge of developing metabolic conditions. This lead too many frustrating experiences that stemmed from my inability to perform gross motor tasks. Like many Americans who need Physical Therapy this life style led to a life event where I injured myself. I had a choice: I could complete the recovery procedures while continuing to live the way that caused the injury, or I could get serious about my health and change my reality. I was very fortunate to get hands-on clinical experience here in Internal Medicine and Cardiology for four weeks. Apart from history taking with examination in both outpatient and inpatient settings with the case presentation in morning rounds and regular daily follow-up of patients, I had the chance to observe sleep studies in detail, how we practically look for any abnormality in each stage of sleep really fascinated me. There are many instances in the recent past that will affect me greatly in my educational pursuits at Colorado Christian University. I am currently employed as a full time nurse and have been for the better part of the last five years. In that time, I have worked in several different settings; I’ve worked acute care, critical care, obstetrics, pediatrics, emergency care, and long term care. With this I chose a game from the LSIS workshop that will help me as well to feel more confident in that area again. I also wanted to challenge my learners a different way than just questioning so I introduced a fun muscle game. I first found a great facial muscle diagram (Bodyteen.com Anatomy 2012) that I always think is a great way to see where the muscles are, seen on Appendix 1. The students do not get taught theory in my lessons however now I am teaching massage I wanted to bring in a game that will help their theory side but also how they perform there practical. I put my learners in to groups of three, they had a list of ten facial muscles, post -it notes and a pen. This was a race to write the muscles down on the post -it notes then stick them on the chosen person of where the muscles are on the face. They had ten minutes to complete the task, once their group had finished they had to put their hand up. Before starting the documentary, I read the paragraph about what it was going to be about to prepare myself for what was to come. The beginning started and it had a very sad tone, which instantly made me upset. Individuals were talking about how they were doing and what life was like. I knew this wasn’t going to be an upbeat documentary, but it really does make you think when your watching and genuinely upsets me. It instantly reminded me of when I observed an Occupational Therapist in the school setting. She worked with some children who had autism, and listening to these individuals in the video and thinking about my personal experience it helped me to really empathize and understand more what they are going through. At first, I was almost losing my patient to the assessment since it was taking too long. There were few questions which I answered even though I wasn’t so sure about it. However, after I got done, I found it to be very interesting. My number 1 dominant theme is Futuristic. I believe that I am futuristic but reading about it actually helped me make sense of the things I do. It seemed to remind me of my ways towards making decisions, ways which I never really paid attention to before. I am a dreamer. There is need for me to fully engage in new experiences and learning opportunities, this will enable me acquire skills in making quick decisions. For example, Sharples (2011) suggests that in times of emergency, making competent decisions while under pressure as a person or as a team is crucial in saving a patient’s life. This may not be possible if I am only using my dominant reflective style of learning, but rather a combination of both reflective and activist style of learning will enable me learn in such complex clinical environment.
