I was thinking that I would incorrectly perform a skill or forget something important. I was expecting the simulation experience to be stressful. Throughout the simulation, I felt more comfortable knowing this was a learning experience and that it was not for pointing out flaws. The instructor guiding us through the event made me feel comfortable and helped me understand the importance of critical thinking and the steps involved in treating an anaphylactic reaction. The other members of my clinical group made me feel comfortable as well; I knew that we were all there to work together as a team and that they were also feeling nervous. My clinical group and I worked together to help treat and provide nursing care to Hal. One nursing instructor guided us throughout the experience while the other nursing instructor acted as the mom during the scenario. The mom in the simulation helped us understand that communication and mutual understanding between a child’s family members and the nurse is very important. Through this experience, I learned more about the effects and mechanisms of Epinephrine and Atropine, the documentation of CPR, and more about pediatric nursing care. I feel confident that I performed well with my communication and skills during the scenario. However, I feel I could have contributed to performing a more effective and thorough initial assessment on Hal, including a health history and complete physical assessment.
Step 6: Action Plan If I were to engage in another pediatric simulation experience, I would feel more confident in my abilities because I would know what to expect and what steps to take.
