Studying Hamlet
In 1603, William Shakespeare published what is now known as one of the greatest plays of all time, Hamlet. Hamlet tells the story of the King of Denmark being murdered by his brother, Claudius. The King of Denmark’s son, Hamlet is visited by his father who has become a ghost and the ghost tells Hamlet that his own brother killed him. The rest of the story displays how Hamlet does everything he can to bring justice to his father’s name and remove Claudius from the throne. This play contains love, passion, mistakes, delusion, pain and revenge.
The Tragedy of Hamlet was definitely different from my other Shakespeare experiences.
Before Hamlet, I had studied Macbeth and Romeo & Juliet. Macbeth was about a power- hungry man that murders his way to power and lets greed overpower his conscience that eventually leads to his death. Romeo and Juliet is a sappy love story. I thought that Hamlet contains many more life lessons than ‘greed is bad’ or ‘love is stronger than anything’. I felt that Hamlet has several life lesson in it that anyone can learn from. Hamlet does everything he can to bring justice to fathers name even in the sacrifice of his public image. For a large portion of the play, Hamlet is looked at as a madman or depressed. Little did people know that Hamlet was just plotting how to get back at Claudius. He does what he has to do and he doesn’t care what other people thought. That’s a great life lesson. To do what has to be done, to do what is right in your heart and to be perseverant. But the thing that I learned from this play that I will remember forever is when Hamlet says “For there is nothing either good or bad but thinking makes it so.” I believe that this quote is going to save me from sadness or anxiety later on in my life. That quote is so philosophical in so little words. What would take people paragraphs or pages or books to explain,
