Reflection On Social Work
show respect towards family traditions and beliefs, treat with dignity and respect, develop an understanding towards sexual orientation and gender, and promote equality.
Social workers help people solve, support, and cope with their problems. In order for me to become a successful social worker I will need to create an understanding and trusting environment for my client, a place where they know they will not feel discriminated. Expectations towards gender and sexual orientation are cultural and bringing change does not happen unless we want it too. My views towards gender and sexual orientation have altered because I was able to understand were other are coming from.

Throughout the course we learned about different fields of social work, the complications that come with the job, and the different people you will encounter. Thus, changing our thoughts and feelings towards social work. Before taking the class our thoughts about social workers were more or less simple minded. I say this because most of us thought social workers simply deal with children and some consider them “child snatchers”. After getting the opportunity to take the class, we learned there is more to social workers than we thought. Social workers work with different ages, races, religions, and genders. We also learned how social workers work with these different populations (Morales, Sheafor, & Scott, 2010). During class we discussed a…

The relevance of this struggle is significant to future work as a social worker. According to Cox (2008), there is a rise of inequality throughout America. As seen in the videos, it is important as social workers to understand and acknowledge the effects of mountaintop removal throughout Appalachia. This struggle results in implications and urgency for all individuals, especially those in the Appalachian, rural, and small town environments. Innovation has an important role in the inclusion of social policies (Pennsylvania municipalities, n.d.). According to NASW (2008), one of a social worker’s responsibilities is to enhance the well-being of all individuals. In other words, social workers improve the quality of life of individuals through research, policy, and direct practice.…

The interest I have in human and social services derives from my desire to assist individuals in my community suffering from adverse effects. I believe in order to eliminate the stigmas associated with human and social services careers; one must proactively and collaboratively be engaged with the individuals utilizing services and colleagues. Collectively, this will encompass effective, efficient, and responsive forms of communication, as the persons in need of assistance possess diverse perspectives of adequate treatment. The populations that intend to assist are those suffering from mental illness and other adverse effects such as rehabilitationwhich inhibits their ability to function properly in society. Societal perception of these individuals…

I really liked reading your post. I also thought about working in a private practice setting. I think that working in a small setting, there is a lot more job security. Working in a high-populated setting means that there is a lot of competition in order to progress at work. I love competition, but I really don’t want to be in competition with about twenty-five other social workers. You have a lot of experience. I have barley even been alive for twenty years. I think that your experience will be very useful in social work. At my practicum, I work in a cubical and make dozens of phone calls a day. I rally don’t like to work in a cubical, I love doing field work, its when we visit peoples homes and actually talk to people in their settings. I…

As another example, one of my group member as well share her feelings regarding the challenges she is experiencing at her placement. She mentioned that she asked one of the staff members a question regarding the resources they agency uses to help their client, but the staff’s response left her unsatisfied. When she shared this experience, it sounds to me that the question she asked was too generic and not specific, therefore, I did some clarification just to understand specifically what she wants to learn. I was glad to give her a feedback regarding the question she asked because I am doing my placement at an employment agency too, and I am knowledgeable about the question she asked. First, I explain to her that organizations have policies…

The difficult part was the service users that I worked with had their own diverse values and that is where I experienced some tensions and dilemmas as to what was the right thing to be doing came up. Different people had different views on what creates risk. In my position as a Social Worker it needs the ability to identify and balance values of benefits and harms, taking into consideration where one’s own value base impacts on the decision making and where we can support people to achieve the best outcomes, using professional rather than personal values. However we are guided by the purpose of the organisation we are employed in, as well as the legal and policy parameters of our society. Additionally, it would appear that the focus of social…
