The Melbourne Declaration asserts that protecting the Nation’s future profitability begins with recognising the importance of the education awarded to current Australian students (MCEETYA, 2008). The Foundation For Young Australians emphasises that achieving a prosperous nation of capable and informed members begins with educational experiences that prepare students for the world following their formal schooling (2013). The Melbourne Declaration supports this position by placing considerable attention towards providing a holistic education for students to become successful learners, confident and creative individuals, as well as active and informed citizens (MCEETYA, 2008). These elements accentuate the importance of cultivating student’s motivation, social understanding, whilst supporting positive personal identity through moral and ethical judgment (MCEETYA, 2008). Despite these intended benefits, ensuring a successful education for every student requires additional considerations.…

The assignment is intended to discuss a case I worked on whilst on my final placement and use an analytic stance to discuss the interaction and interventions used with the service user. In order to maintain confidentiality and anonymity of the service users in this case study I will be using pseudonyms for all people involved and mentioned in relation to this case. The assignment will demonstrate professional judgement, accountability of a social worker and the statutory requirements of protection and intervention when working with vulnerable adults. The case study will focus on my work with Sarah throughout my time on placement and assess my principal interventions as well as locating my work within the wider discourses around risk deploying both recovery and exchange models. It will also highlight the strengths and limitations within the process of recovery. Within this case study I will aim to describe and analyse the practice, theories and values that have emerged by carrying out this piece of work. The assignment will critically evaluate my practice with specific reference to the social work skills used. By reflecting on my practice I hope to demonstrate how I have considered issues such as power imbalances and social injustice and how this consideration has assisted me to work in an anti-oppressive, non-judgemental way with the service user involved. With reference to this particular case study I will also demonstrate to the reader the power imbalance that existed between the professionals in terms of their approach. This was clearly evident in relation to the social model approach versus the medical model approach. Drawing on my observation and the experience of working within an inter-professional team I will provide critical appraisal of the issues and barriers that existed. I will also compare, contrast and evaluate the medical and social model of mental health and mental disorder by referring to appropriate literature and…

I started my shift at 7:15 am. My work clothes are comfortable and unrestrictive; my footwear is flat, sensible and offers protection to my feet and ankles. When I arrive to the service user’s home, I knock on the door and wait to be let in either by one of the service user’s or by a work colleague. Once inside I greet the service user, if they are awake. I then head to the sleep in room, to start verbal handover with my work colleague. After the 15 minute handover, I then check and sign the handover sheet. Check the on call rota, should there be an incident or or accident. Also check the communication book and also check any money and medication, then checking the activity planner. Once the service user wakes, we say hello to each other, and chat for a short period. I encourage them to start their personal care. After, I ask them if they need any support with getting dressed and preparing breakast. The time is now 8:00 so I administrer the morning medication. I always wash my hands before handling food or medication and after assisting with any personal care. After the service user has had their breakfast. I support them with the washing up. I will then encourage the service user to clean their property. I will then support the indiviual in safely cleaning, all ares with correct products. After this I consult with the service user, about their activity plan for the day, if the service user decided to go into town. I ask them how they would prefer to travel, by bus or by personal car.…

On Friday the 8th of April, I participated in windsurfing and paddleboarding on Lake Pupuke. I demonstrated Tolerance as my responsible behaviour. This affected my physical safety because I didn't jump ahead of anyone or rush and I took my time so that I would be more safe and listened to the instructions despite that it was repeated many times. I also waited for those who weren't as confident and let them take their time and waited for them to be done so that everyone was safe and I knew that they would be safe.…

When I started my work placement at my setting I was working with my members of staff and manager who told me how to monitor children when they eat and which child cannot eat certain food because of their religion or culture. Before I started to give out the food for the children I had to read the food policies and procedures to know how to serve the food and drink for the children. At my placement I learnt how to monitor the children when they ate and how much they ate, and also about their allergies. I had to monitor how much the children drink and I had to make sure that they drink enough water or milk.…

What is reflective practice? In short, it’s a practice that helps you become an active learner. Many of us, including myself, may be considered or interpreted as passive learners. Passive learning goes a bit like this: we read textbooks, we follow everything our instructor or teacher tells us (sometimes we tune out), we write exams and then…we forget what we learned. It’s common and though not everybody goes through this, historically, it happens more often than not. However, with active learning we engage in conversations with our classmates and teacher, we ask questions, we figure out answers, we contribute and learn and teach each other. And ultimately, we engage with ourselves (and seldom tune out as a result). Oxford dictionary defines reflection as “a serious thought or consideration…an idea about something, especially one that is written down and expressed”. Reflective practice facilitates coping. From a personal perspective it is different for each of us like writing personal journals or talking on the phone with family/friends. From a professional perspective this is usually mores structured like when we complete our weekly log after a clinical day and reflect on what occurred during our time on the unit and reflect on a single moment and how we felt about it.…

The role of a social worker is to act in the best interest of the children they are working with, to make sure the basic needs of each child is met. The social workers feel as if they are being successful at their jobs as long as the children that are on their caseloads age-out of the foster care system and are not in jail the next day. Or they are successful if the youth they are working with actually graduate from high school. As a social worker it should be seen as successful if the children that they are working with are learning the skills that they need to become well-functioning members of society, and are able to obtain the goals and dreams that they have. To be successful one must…
