My Reflection
This course was my first writing course in college and although I feel I tried my hardest on each assignment I think I deserve a B+ in this class. In this class I feel I had both strengths and weaknesses. My weaknesses include dyslexia and my overall writing skills; while my strengths include overcoming obstacles I had not faced before in my academic life.
At an early age I was diagnosed with dyslexia, not as severe as some but dyslexia none the less. My parents transferred me to a private elementary school here in Boulder. By doing this they hoped I would get more one on one attention. At this school I had a private tutor. I would meet with her a couple times a week. In the beginning it was determined through standardized tests that both my reading and writing abilities were well below proficient. I spent two full years with my tutor trying different methods to help me read and write better. Slowly but steadily I caught up to my classmates. Even though I am now considered proficient in both categories, I sometimes still have trouble with reading and writing. I’m not a very fast reader and most times I have to re-read things to fully comprehend the meaning. Unfortunately I think this inability has hindered my performance in the class. Although I feel I have tried really hard and have put in a lot of time my scores especially on the narrative essay don’t reflect that. At the beginning of the semester I was quite lacking in organizational skills. In high school, we weren’t assigned much formal writing, so my base for organization was not solid. I think this is one of the places I have most improved over the past semester. I myself can see an improvement between the organization of the narrative essay and the research paper. Although my organization now may not be great, I think it is one of the areas in which I’ve improved the most. Because my organization isn’t great I don’t think I deserve an A, but due to my improvement I think I deserve a B+. Another thing I have a hard time with is procrastination. I know it’s not good but it just always seems to happen. I think your class has significantly helped me begin to overcome this bad habit by setting numerous deadlines and having many revisions due. In high school a teacher would assign a paper and then a month it was due. There would be no dead lines in between and unfortunately I would find myself a couple nights before the deadline with a blank sheet of paper. I feel that by having at least one new draft due each week really helps me to just sit down and do the work rather than put it off. I am going to try and employ this in my academic life by setting personal deadlines for revisions or any other multi-step processes. I know my best work happens when I edit and revise many times so hopefully by employing this new strategy assignments will become easier and less stressful. I have already begun to combat this bad habit by setting up appointments with the writing center to help critique my work outside of class. I think by going to the writing center multiple times and showing up for every workshop it shows that I really do care and try on each assignment which is why I think I deserve a B+. Although I did have weaknesses there were some things I felt I did well during this course. The use of citing and references was a brand new topic for me. In high school, we used bibliographies but there, they were not as formal, and the papers didn’t use in-text citations. To my surprise, I feel I picked up on this idea rather quickly and it really makes sense to me. Along with citations, I feel I have gained a very good understanding of the library’s database and until this past semester I had never used it. This database was extremely helpful in finding the scholarly journal articles I needed to complete my research paper. Finally, I remember the first day you had assigned the rhetorical analysis and I was quite intimidated having never done one before. With time and energy, I cranked through each one and got more comfortable each time. Also, my grades improved with each one and by the third they were a breeze. I am happy I learned how to do a rhetorical analysis but more importantly I proved to myself that even something that looked impossible can be done if taken in small parts.

I am improving in revising my own essay. I have also noticed I have improved on analysis where I had trouble with. At the beginning of this quarter I would usually put one sentence or two and now I am getting the hang of analysis. Also, I am improving in Works cited. This time I think I did well in the organization because I put the archetypes in chronological order, but also a repetition of archetypes. For example, good, bad, good, bad because in life there is always obstacles and it is not always going to be good times. Overall, strengths were the length requirement, which I think I exceeded to do more than the minimum requirement that was 4 pages, improving in MLA format, and citing sources. I have improved in grammar and organization. I think I have improved in analysis and also in my analysis conclusion. My weaknesses, I felt were the paragraphs that did not relate back to my thesis and also the shapeshifter paragraph was not…

The most single important piece of knowledge I have gained in English class this year was the fact that if you work hard enough and put effort into your work, in the end, it will result in good things further ahead in the future. My level of effort on my assignment this year so far has been not so great than what I wanted it to be. I can say that it’s due to the fact that I am partially lazy and I may not find the topic so interesting but either way, one has to do the work and you might as well enjoy it. I didn’t actually do my best quality work. I who have like to try, but sadly I did not. My best moments I have had in class was when we all read “One Flew over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and when we watched the movie version of the…

Overall, my experience taking English 106-H was fulfilled and I truly enjoyed my time in class. What were once weaknesses, slowly, but surely became strengths. Thus, it was through my weaknesses that helped me develop my writing skills, making me a stronger writer. Through free writing, word traps, and ideas of my own, I was able to implement those strategies into my writing. Nevertheless, I have reached my goal, but still will continue to strive for even stronger writing through out all of my courses at Lycoming College.…

I believe that the strength of this essay is the integration of research and I feel that this is the best essay I have written this semester. I believe that the weakness is the MLA formatting in the works cited portion of the essay. With these in mind, I believe this essay is worth an A.…

This class has taught me many things about myself along with many necessary skills needed while writing. I know now that, through hard work and determination, I can achieve what I might think to be impossible. While reflecting back on my initial writing abilities, I see the weak, uneducated style of writing. Each essay shows my progression and improvement, and, after a while, the class began to become much easier. Today, after practicing throughout my essays this semester, I believe that I, in fact, have…

Believe it or not I have not always been as bright as I am now. There was a time when I was the kid who struggled in many of his classes, not the one that people went to for advise on a subject. I hated school because it was extremely hard for me. I was born on May the 11, 1994 in Nashville tennessee. I came from a well to do family and when i was of age was enrolled into private school where i spend the rest of my schooling up through high school. It was evident at an early age that there was something different about me. the first sign was my speech impediment, for the life of me i could not say the letter S every sentence i spoke was a struggle. Then it was reading and spelling. I was behind most of the other kid in both, I read slower and could not spell the same level words as the other kids. It was so bad that in kindergarten i was made to repeat it. Then came elementary school which went much better then preschool had gone, but i still struggled with things. Then in the third grade my parent took me to get tested to determine my mental ability. That is when i found out i am dyslexia. dyslexia is a learning disorder characterized by difficulty reading, spelling, and in young children affects there speech. This was devastating to me, because as a third grader all i wanted to be was normal, and at the felt like people would think i was retarded. through all of this my parents only encouraged me, telling me that i could overcome this setback. That is exactly what i set out to do. Starting in the fourth grade every afternoon i would leave school and go straight to tutoring at the learning lab. I hated this because while all my friends were playing at home i was studying but i knew that it would be worth it. My parents also made me take adrenal which i thought was super embarrassing and i can remember to this day hiding them in the cracks of the table or under my chair so i would not have to take them.…

As nervous as I was when I walked into Saint Joseph Catholic School (K-8) for my first day of kindergarten, I never thought I would be able to leave after 6th grade and enter the world of middle school. In a small school of about 400 kids, I was familiar with every face that passed by me in the hallway. I got to know the kids in my grade so well and we all knew each other’s life stories. By the time I was in 6th grade at Saint Joseph, some of my friends were planning on going to Kinard middle school in 7th grade. At this point in my life, I was not completely content with where I was going to school. The realization came to me that it was time to move on. It was time for me to try something new.…

Over the past 3 months, my writing has improved dramatically. After writing countless essays and journals along with other assignments, I can say that my writing has almost become twice as good since high school. For this I am grateful. The writing skills that I have learned will be very useful in life beyond college. I have learned that writing is an art form; And similar to pieces of art, writing improves over time and it an always be improved. Among the many aspects of writing that I have improved upon, the most important things include: How to develop an introduction paragraph, teacher feedback, and developing transitions from one topic to another.…

Our first essay of Freshman Composition was to write a narrative about something that impacted our lives. I didn’t really know what to expect from this assignment. I knew I could write about my car wreck and give precise details about every little moment. When I started writing, I created a mind map to organize all the details. However, I was worried about my writing skills. I didn’t know what my instructor was expecting from me in this paper. I have never been a strong writer and that really concerned me when it came time to receive a grade. When I turned in the assignment I knew I had a strong detailed and easy to imagine story. However, I knew I was weak with my word choices and grammar. Grammar is the biggest thing that drags me down when I write papers for important classes even though I know my information. Because I knew that before going to write this paper, I looked for resources to help me. I found a website that points out your grammar and spelling mistakes for free. I know you can’t rely on the internet so I would read over it on different days to see if I found something new to correct. This helped in the end because I got a good grade on the paper and did well on grammar.…

How good can I be at writing, I thought I was amazing, this semester showed me there is always room for improvement.Coming into a senior composition class to learn about the best format to write papers is stressful, especially for a slam poet. I hadn’t really learned a lot about my professional writing before. I always thought I was a wiz at correctly writing complex papers. I read some of my old writing recently, it’s atrocious. From my atrocious writings of yesterday to the writings of tomorrow, I have certainly climbed the ranks to better writing since taking this class.…

Hello, I’m Hannah. This is my freshman year of college, and this reflection is for my UWRT 1103 class. Overall I think that this is a successful semester. We have covered research skills, writing skills, and what encompasses the human experience. This class has also touched upon discrimination and ways to help solve those issues. I have learned how to do field research through my practicum. The best part of my practicum experience was becoming more acquainted with some of the people in my dorm. Another learning experience was the different forms of literacy. I learned that literacy doesn’t only have to do reading or writing. The best part of my literacy project was being able to practice my baking skills.…

Georgia State University was my destination the fall of 2005. I was a starting freshman for the class of 2009. Everything seemed to be going perfect because I had graduated high school with a high grade point average. I thought I was the ready for every class especially English 1101 because I felt that my former high school teachers had taught me everything I need for college, little did I know that I had no clue how to write like a good writer. I lacked the grammar skills I need in order to present the message I need to convey to my audience in my essays, I did not know how to have sentence variety, and last but not least I thought it was not an important thing to back up my statements with real examples. My first writing assignment grade proves that I had a lot to learn my freshman semester at Georgia State University.…

After reflecting on all of my past writing assignments it appears my most impressive work was my personal best essay. Although I put an equal amount of effort into my later essays as I did to my personal best for reasons I couldn’t explain at the time I wasn’t able to fully apply the material to my current professional life. The main difference between my personal best scenario and all of my other essays was that in my personal best I had a formal position title that officially made me the leader and since then I have not had a position where I had official authority over other people. Even though it was mentioned in class on numerous occasions that a position title within an organization does not necessarily make you a leader and that subordinates can still act as leaders to their supervisors; it wasn’t until now that I fully grasped that concept. Leaders are not born, they are made, and they are made through the five practices……
