Reflective Essay: A Career As An Activist
When I graduated University of Arizona in 2007, I thought I was done with school. I did not need any further accreditations or degrees, what I had completed thus far was enough to get me a job I desired and experience in the workplace would take over from there. Being in the workforce for almost 10 years now, I have realized my previous notions were naïve and narrow minded, but what did I know at 22?
I finished college with a degree in Family Studies and Human Development wanting to work with special needs children teaching them not only classroom type lessons, but more importantly how to be an independent and self-reliant person in the world. I took great pride in helping provide these children tools for success in the future. After a year,

It is my job to ensure my employees are trained properly to underwrite a risk that is profitable for our Company and provide input to our Senior Leaders if I see any changes that need to be made. Working in this role, I have found that my skill as an Underwriter is there, but my skill in the financials, reports and overall business sense is lacking. Acknowledging this and knowing that in order to further succeed I need to further my education to achieve my goals. Getting my MBA is what I need in order to take my career to the next level achieving Senior Management level and beyond.
In both my personal and professional life, I have always been good at managing many tasks at once. Instead of feeling overwhelmed, I prioritize and tackle each item or problem when they come. When I have a work or personal project that requires extended time and focus, I provide myself with the tools and availability necessary to succeed. Having the ability to complete an MBA degree fully online comes at a great advantage because I do travel for work and it would allow me to not miss any classes or cause me to put my education

I am grateful to have had the opportunity to work with students of different ethnicities, different socio-economic backgrounds and special education. I have also worked with high school students of various sexual orientations. Working with different people has shaped my identity by becoming aware that we are all different and that is what truly makes society beautiful. It has shaped my self-awareness by connecting me with my true desire in life. That is why I extremely passionate to help children and young adolescents achieve success. My experiences have broadened my understanding of the role in social work in society because I feel one can do so much for others. I have gained enough experience, which allows me to believe that I have the flexibility and adaptability to work with different populations. My previous experience has influenced my understanding of and commitment to social justice because it is sad to witness children with a 30,000-word gap deficit come into my classroom as opposed to children from higher social economic statuses who have a larger array of vocabulary. Then as they get older we see this gap widened regardless of ethnicity based on social economic status and students who are learning English as a second language. I want all children to have the same access to an amazing…

When I graduated high school in 2013 I attended a community college in Pennsylvania for a semester. My thought on college in high school were “I don’t really want to continue my education for another four years”. That was until my high school counselor called me to her office seeing that I didn’t apply for schools. She explained that I wouldn’t be able to get a good job or ever own a house without a college degree, so that fear pushed me into continuing my education. My parents were the same way they also told me “most jobs would hire a college graduate over a high school graduate”. That was the final push towards the path of…

My professional goal is to become a teacher with hard work and dedication I know I can reach my lifetime goal. For my extra-curricular activities, I have attended the Head Start at Brookhaven Community College where I have volunteered over thirty hours in a semester to get myself prepared for the profession. Going to the local Head Start gave me the opportunity to see if this is really what I want to do for many years. I put myself in a position where I actually enjoyed what I was doing, I had patience which a lot of people don’t have to teach younger kids. I worked with three to five years old, I had to show them I was the leader. In my four years of High School, I have taken my time out to be a leader in my school. I was vice-president freshman…

My name is Regina Goforth-Lewis. I was born and raised in Michigan. As a young child, I went to four different elementary schools. I ended up graduating High School from the last of those schools, Southfield Christian High School. It was here that I decided I would eventually work with youth in some way. My life took a small detour before I got to that point. I attended the Oakland Community College shortly after graduating, however, decided to work full time and pursue a different career avenue: Retail Management. Although this was exciting and perfect for me at the time, I knew it was not my calling. Around the age of 22, I decided to enroll back to in college part time and follow the original dream of working with young people. I studied under the Social Work/Mental Health field. I never completed the program to receive my Associates Degree; however, I do have 66 credit hours accumulated. During this time, I loved college and my internship, which later became a fulltime job at the H.A.V.E.N. I worked there as a Supervised Visitation Specialist for many years. While working in the social work field and also in the communications field, I met and married my husband and we started a family. I always knew if it was feasible I would want to be able to stay at home with my children for as long as possible and I was fortunate enough to be able to do this for almost 13 years. Along the way I held down several part time jobs to earn extra income for the family, these jobs always included working with youth to some degree, such as a shift supervisor at the local Parks and Recreation Center’s concession stand or at the Elementary School where the children attended as a lunch room monitor. I also volunteered time at my church as a Sunday school teacher, a senior high youth advisor and a Deacon. I read to students at the library and taught American Sign Language (ASL) to hearing children. After 15 years, my children’s father and I divorced. I currently find myself as…

As a child, I always admired and respected men and women who served the United States in the Navy and armed forces. These positions required a lot of sacrifice which meant that only the strongest willed of them made it through. That will power seemed to distinguish them from other members of society, they were mentally and physically stronger. When it came time for me to look into applying for colleges, I looked for places that had good engineering programs, top tier educations, and a structured student campus life. Many universities had the former two requirements, however, very few had the latter requirement. While discussing college options with my computer engineering teacher, he recommended I look into the United States Naval Academy…

<br>Coming out of High School, I had in my possession the perspective that I knew everything. So I started, straight off the bat, working in a variety of menial jobs, which would have lead me to a dead end, for as the good jobs in today's society required college degrees. So, after working for two years with a white-collar full of frustration, I decided it was time to take matters into my own ink-stained, carpal tunnel syndrome-stricken hands. I immediately gave my two-weeks notice, and pontificated about going to college.…

I still wanted to be in the medical field, I just didn’t want to do the gruesome stuff! A few years down the road my now three year old started to have some developmental problems and started having severe seizures. I felt teaching was taking too much of my energy and I needed to focus on recovery. There was, however, the passion for teaching that lay dormant. I still find myself thinking about how I would structure a classroom, what kind of paraprofessionals I would supervise, and what new technologies I would implement in my teaching space. I think about lesson plans, accommodations, modifications, and the varied population of students that I have taught over the years. Even when changing careers, I find myself surrounded by people with special needs, varying from severe to mild. I am at my best when working with the segment of the population that has differing abilities. My colleagues have been overwhelmingly supportive of my decision and I concur that attending graduate school for a master’s degree in special education is the right choice for me to reenter the education…

Initially a master’s degree will give me the added credentials needed to pursue a promotion or career change that I would not have been considered for with my current education level. The norm was that a company required you to have a bachelor’s degree to be considered as a candidate in the corporate world. This is no longer the case as employers are demanding candidates attain the life experience in conjunction with a master’s degree. Stronger economy and more company demands for management degrees have positively shifted the local and international market for candidates whom hold a MBA (Rebecca Kaplan (2008). “Demand for MBA on the Rise). This evidence confirms having a master’s degree significantly increases my marketability. Since only a small percentage of people in the United States have a master’s degree, holding one can put me ahead of the pack when competing for a job (“Jane Porter, (2006). “Forecast: MBA Hiring Up Again). Employers are leaning toward hiring more MBA candidates because they are looking for people with managerial and team experience (“Jane Porter, (2006). “Forecast: MBA Hiring Up Again). These facts indicates that companies value a higher education and are willing to provide more opportunities, greater…

I continued working in the cafeteria for a few more years, all the while working with and learning about the special needs programs in our school system. Jessica constantly encouraged me to get my paraprofessional certificate. I was fearful to take a test; I do not like taking tests. She shared a quote from my now favorite educator/philosopher John Dewey, “The most important attitude that can be formed is that of the desire to go on learning.” Finally, I took the test, passed it, interviewed for a position and was offered a position in the Georgia Network for Educational and Therapeutic Support (GNETS) all in two weeks. I took that as my sign I was doing the right thing.…
